Marco de la Rasilla, profesor e investigador de la Universidad de Oviedo, dice que, hace 50.000 años, Europa era esencialmente neandertal, es decir, sus habitantes eran recios, con un cráneo alargado y amplio, baja estatura y complexión robusta. No eran los únicos homínidos que habitaban el planeta por aquella época, desde África comenzaban a expandirse por Oriente Medio los humanos modernos, homo sapiens, con un cráneo más redondeado y un cuerpo más estilizado que el neandertal. Y más al noreste habitaban los denisovanos, llamados así porque sus restos se encontraron en una cueva de Denísova, en Siberia, aunque sus escasos restos no permiten hacer una descripción clara de su fisionomía. Así pues, tres homínidos distintos, compartieron un periodo su existencia a lo largo de una extensa región y, según los últimos datos genéticos, los encuentros no siempre fueron beligerantes, también se mezclaron y tuvieron descendencia entre ellos.
