Un estudio publicado en el año 2021 exploró la función de un área particular del córtex prefrontal, la llamada área 10 de Brodman, en el engaño cara a cara. Los investigadores invitaron a parejas de participantes a jugar a un juego de cartas que implicaba mentir y detectar mentiras mientras analizaban la actividad cerebral en el CPF mediante la técnica denominada espectroscopia funcional de infrarrojo cercano (fNIRS). Los resultados de este estudio revelaron que el córtex prefrontal anterior del cerebro se activaba tanto en la producción como en la detección de mentiras, sin que esta activación guardara relación con la recompensa recibida.
