Nocebo Effect ~ Change What You Believe or it Will Become Manifest

from Tyler Summers Podcast · host Tyler Summers

The opposite of the placebo effect is the nocebo effect—a lot less fun than its counterpart. With the placebo effect, we can tell someone something positive, and their belief often leads to beneficial outcomes. For instance, giving a patient a sugar pill while telling them it will cure their ailment often leads to improvements, even though the pill contains no active medicine. The nocebo effect works in a similar way but with negative consequences. Many of us have heard stories about people who were told they had only two weeks to live, and tragically, they passed away exactly within that timeframe. Dr. Bruce Lipton shares a powerful example in his book Biology of Belief. In the 1970s, a man was diagnosed with throat cancer and told he had just months to live. True to the prognosis, he passed away within that period. However, an autopsy later revealed there was no cancer at all—it had been a misdiagnosis. This begs the question: where in your life might you be believing something that isn’t true? Are you creating your own nocebo effect by accepting a false diagnosis or negative belief about yourself?
