Northern State Hospital

Northern State Hospital once stood as Washington State’s largest psychiatric institution, housing thousands of patients during the early 20th century. Built to ease overcrowding at other mental hospitals, it quickly became a self-contained world—complete with farms, workshops, and staff housing. But behind its peaceful valley setting lay stories of overcrowding, experimental treatments, and neglect.
