Northern State Hospital
Northern State Hospital once stood as Washington State’s largest psychiatric institution, housing thousands of patients during the early 20th century. Built to ease overcrowding at other mental hospitals, it quickly became a self-contained world—complete with farms, workshops, and staff housing. But behind its peaceful valley setting lay stories of overcrowding, experimental treatments, and neglect. Today, the abandoned grounds are known as much for their eerie atmosphere as for their tragic past. If you enjoy this episode, be sure to leave us a review and subscribe so you never miss an episode! Jesse Timmendequas
In this episode we explore the heartbreaking case of Megan Kanka, a 7-year-old girl from Hamilton Township, New Jersey, whose 1994 murder shocked the nation and led to sweeping legal reform. Megan was lured into her neighbor’s home, assaulted, and murdered by Jesse Timmendequas, a convicted sex offender who lived across the street—unknown to her family and the community. The public outcry after her murder led to the creation of “Megan’s Law,” a set of policies requiring public notification of sex offenders living in the community.
