NOW YOU MADE IT AWKWARD Ep174: "A Few Pixels Short of Lara Croft"
from NOW YOU MADE IT AWKWARD · host SHOKY
Jefe and Chad are both missing on this MLK day but we have Other Kevin joining for his first real show! With the 4 year anniversary of the show coming up, Shoky asks if anyone knows the name of the very first episode of NYMIA? We discuss Shaun's dad's cancer and the alternate treatments he's seeking. Why is it that modern medicine only ever takes a single route? Chemo and Radiation. People are discovering workable methods that don't destroy your body. But also we ask: "have you ever had just truly rude or dismissive doctors?" Speaking of dad's in need: Rodney's dad needs assistance. Please donate anything you can to help out this family: https://gofund.me/cef5a4246 We hear Other Kevin's history of moving across the US as a civil engineer. How triangles are your friend and how some people are born to be engineers and some are born to be mechanics. Speaking of, Shoky tells of the struggles in what seemed to be a really simple brake job gone wrong. Once again we have to talk Emily in Paris and K POP Demon Hunters, because they are shows that middle aged men shouldn't be interested in, but for some reason they work! Another female lead show is on the way. We got the first look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider series on Amazon. She looks the part...mostly. But given that the show is directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, people are extremely reticent that she won't ruin another great character like she did with James Bond and Indiana Jones. However, Lara is a female fusion of both of those characters. So maybe there is hope! Question though: are Lara Croft and Indiana Jones morally gray characters? They do steal things from foreign countries for fame or money. Speaking of ruining franchises: Kathleen Kennedy is finally leaving Lucasfilm! The internet of Nerds rejoiced as though a great evil had left the galaxy. BUT, does she deserve all the hatred that has come her way the last decade or so? We look over her history in Hollywood and the movies and franchises she was a part of. Leading to rehashing the Star Wars sequels for the 19th time, and also pointing out plot holes in Back to the Future. Which one was your favorite movie featuring Marty and Doc Brown? And finally the chaos in Minnesota is still increasing. Since Other Kevin lived there once he gives a little insight into the area. What this episode covers
With Jefe and Chad out for MLK Day, NYMIA welcomes Other Kevin for his first full show as the crew approaches the podcast’s 4-year anniversary. Shoky challenges the group to remember the name of the very first episode (spoiler: nobody can). The conversation turns serious as Shaun discusses his dad’s cancer diagnosis and alternative treatments, sparking a broader talk about the limits of modern medicine and experiences with dismissive doctors. The crew also shares a donation link to help Rodney’s father during a difficult time. Other Kevin talks about his life as a civil engineer, why triangles matter, and the difference between engineers and mechanics — followed by Shoky’s own cautionary tale of a “simple” brake job gone wrong. The show lightens up with talk of guilty-pleasure shows like Emily in Paris and K-Pop Demon Hunters, the upcoming Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner, and whether characters like Lara Croft and Indiana Jones are actually morally gray. The episode wraps with reactions to Kathleen Kennedy leaving Lucasfilm, another round of Star Wars sequel debates, Back to the Future plot holes, and insight into the growing chaos in Minnesota.
