La actividad antitumoral del sistema inmunitario depende en gran medida de la activación de los conocidos como linfocitos T citotóxicos, o citolíticos, que son capaces de matar a las células que se encuentran enfermas y que, por esta razón, suponen una amenaza para la vida de todas las células del organismo. Las células T citolíticas no están normalmente activadas ni capacitadas para matar. Necesitan la presencia de células presentadoras de antígenos, ya que presentan a las células T los antígenos, las moléculas, extraños que provienen de los microorganismos y también de los genes mutados de las células tumorales. Las células presentadoras de antígenos se activan al detectar moléculas de microorganismos o daño en los tejidos causado por las células tumorales. Para su activación necesita de una proteína llamada STING. La activación de la proteína STING por medios farmacológicos se ha mostrado eficaz para activar a más células T citolíticas y disminuir el desarrollo de los tumores.
