NYDL Episode 57: Tyre Nichols

Where do we go from here? Another black person killed by the police but the optics are a little different in this case. Tyre Nichols was brutally beaten to death (died three days later in the hospital from injuries sustained in the altercation) by 5 BLACK Memphis police officers on January 7th, 2023 during a routine traffic stop. While his family and world seems to look for answers we have some for you to reflect on. To understand these answers you must understand two ideas: White Supremacy and Institutional / Structural Racism. Where is the Black Lives Matter or Blue Lives Matter factions in this ordeal…they both have been mighty quiet. There is not simply white faces to blame for this tragedy. How do we meaningfully grapple with that in a constructive way? What does our community need to do to increase safety while living amongst each other? What can we do to meaningfully create the kind of power that can stand up to THE power? Is race the only factor in these kinds of deadly interactions with police?
