October 29 | Christ-Centered, Not Self-Centered
from The Bible in a Year: Daily Reading & Devotion Hosted by Kevin Harrison
Today's reading from Jeremiah 18–19 and 2 Timothy 3 invites us to consider what happens when people place themselves at the center of life rather than allowing God to shape their hearts. Both passages remind us that spiritual formation is an ongoing process of surrender, awareness, and learning to reflect God's character in the way we live and relate to others. In Jeremiah, God uses the image of a potter working with clay to help His people understand their relationship with Him. The clay is meant to be shaped by the hands of the potter, just as God's people are called to remain responsive to His direction. But when pride and resistance take hold, people begin trusting their own judgment rather than allowing God to form their identity and guide their obedience. In 2 Timothy, Paul warns Timothy about the attitudes that will characterize difficult times, beginning with people becoming lovers of themselves. His concern reaches beyond outward behavior to the condition of the heart, particularly when people maintain an appearance of godliness without experiencing its transforming power. Timothy's calling is to recognize these patterns and remain faithful to a way of life shaped by Christ rather than personal ambition or self-interest. Together, these passages invite us to reflect on who or what occupies the center of our lives. In a world marked by division, hostility, and competing opinions, they encourage us to consider whether our responses to others are being shaped by our own desires or by the patient, transforming work of Christ within us.
