October 8 | Don't Worry, Be Happy
from The Bible in a Year: Daily Reading & Devotion Hosted by Kevin Harrison
Today's reading from Isaiah 30–31 and Philippians 4 invites us to reflect on where we turn when fear and uncertainty press in. Both passages remind us that peace is not found by ignoring what troubles us, but formed over time as we learn to bring our lives honestly before God. In Isaiah, God's people are tempted to run to Egypt for help, trusting in horses and alliances instead of the Lord. Yet God calls them back with a gentle and steady word: in returning and rest they will be saved, and in quietness and trust will be their strength. This reminds us that identity and security are rooted in patiently walking the way God sets before us. In Philippians, Paul writes to a church unsettled by conflict between two faithful women and calls them to rejoice, pray, and give thanks rather than let worry take over. He describes a peace that guards the heart and mind, and invites them to focus their thoughts on what is true and good. Together, these passages invite us to notice where our minds drift when we feel uncertain. They ask us to consider what it might look like to return to God in quiet trust, and to let His peace settle what worry tries to divide.
