El Ahnenerbe u Oficina de Herencia Ancrestral fue un centro de investigación nazi muy peculiar. Enclavado desde 1937 en las SS del todopoderoso Himmler y esplendidamente financiado logró reunir un equipo de más de 200 "investigadores" de distintas disciplinas (arqueologia, zoologia, antropologia, botánica, arte...) cuyo objetivo era demostrar científicamente el vínculo existente entre la supuesta raza aria y las antiguas tribus germánicas y nórdicas. Con ese objetivo se llegaron a realizar hasta 8 expediciones científicas, la más conocida de las cuales es la expedición al Tibet liderada en 1939 por Shaeffer. A partier del inicio de la guerra el Ahnenerbe sirvió a objetivos aún más siniestros siendo responsable de muchos de los experimientos criminales con prisioneros en los campos de exterminio.
