Hoy vamos a hablar de algo que muchas veces olvidamos: la relación directa entre la salud de nuestra boca y la salud general del cuerpo.Este es un tema realmente importante y todavía muy desconocido para muchas personas.Muchas veces pensamos que una caries o un problema de encías solo afecta a la boca. ¿Eso es realmente así?En absoluto. La boca forma parte del cuerpo y está completamente conectada con nuestra salud general. Hoy sabemos científicamente que enfermedades de las encías, infecciones orales o inflamación crónica pueden relacionarse con patologías cardiovasculares, diabetes, problemas respiratorios e incluso complicaciones en el embarazo.¿De qué manera puede afectar la boca al corazón?Cuando existe enfermedad periodontal —lo que comúnmente conocemos como piorrea o enfermedad de las encías— aparecen bacterias e inflamación que pueden pasar al torrente sanguíneo. Eso incrementa la inflamación sistémica del organismo y puede aumentar el riesgo cardiovascular.Por eso insistimos tanto en la prevención y en las revisiones periódicas. Cuidar las encías también es cuidar el corazón.También existe una relación muy importante con la diabetes, ¿verdad?Sí, y además es una relación bidireccional. La diabetes mal controlada empeora la salud de las encías, pero a su vez una infección periodontal dificulta el control de la glucosa. Muchas veces, mejorar la salud oral ayuda incluso a mejorar parámetros metabólicos del paciente.Hay embarazadas que tienen miedo de acudir al dentista.Y precisamente durante el embarazo es cuando más importante es acudir. Los cambios hormonales aumentan la inflamación de las encías y existen estudios que relacionan ciertas infecciones orales con parto prematuro o bajo peso al nacer.Un embarazo saludable también pasa por una boca sana.Entonces la odontología va mucho más allá de la estética.Muchísimo más. Claro que una sonrisa bonita ayuda a la autoestima, pero nuestra labor principal es prevenir enfermedad y mejorar salud. Muchas veces detectamos signos en la boca que alertan de problemas generales antes incluso de que el paciente sea consciente.Y esa visión integral es precisamente una de las bases de vuestra clínica.Sí.
