Nuestra respuesta a olores desagradables se había pensado como un proceso cognitivo consciente, que los asocia con posibles peligros. Sin embargo, un estudio reciente realizado por investigadores del Instituto Karolinska, señala que es un proceso inconsciente y extremadamente rápido. Los investigadores desarrollaron un método que les permitió medir las señales del bulbo olfatorio humano que procesan el olor y emiten impulsos que se transmiten a las partes del cuerpo que controlan el movimiento. Sus resultados están basados en tres experimentos en los que los participantes tuvieron que valorar sus experiencias con seis olores diferentes, unos agradables, otros no, mientras la actividad electro fisiológica del bulbo olfatorio, en forma de una respuesta a cada olor, se cuantificaba.
