On The Record with WNXP: Squid

from WNXP Podcasts · host WNXP Nashville

They’ve been dubbed post-punk, but that doesn’t quite encompass what Brighton’s Squid is capable of. Drummer and singer Ollie Judge has gone on the record calling the quintet’s sound “some sort of twisted, 21st-century jazz,” pairing rock guitars with classical and jazz instrumentation. It’s chaotic and frenetic, but intentional. Their latest LP O Monolith showcases exactly that. Regardless of its lack of “genre,” everything Squid does is expansive and all-consuming. It’s bigger than the sound they create. It’s a work of art.Watch Squid perform “Fugue (Bin Song),” “Undergrowth” and “Swing (In A Dream)” live at WNXP’s Sonic Cathedral here.
