Hace 505 millones de años, a mediados del Cámbrico, parte de lo que hoy son las montañas del oeste del Canadá se encontraba bajo el mar, cerca de un acantilado submarino vertical. De tanto en tanto, un alud de barro cubría el lecho marino. Los seres vivos que tenían la mala suerte de encontrarse allí morían por la falta de oxígeno y quedaban enterrados. Así surgió la formación geológica de los esquistos de Burgess, donde, en 1966 el paleontólogo británico Harry Blackmore Whittington descubrió un nuevo ejemplar muy bien conservado de Opabinia, un animal tan extraño que en la primera presentación pública del análisis de Whittington, la audiencia estalló en carcajadas. Con una longitud total de unos diez centímetros, su característica principal es la trompa o probóscide hueca y flexible que se proyecta hacia abajo desde la parte inferior de la cabeza.
