Viele verbinden mit Open Source uneingeschränkte Freiheit in der Nutzung des Quelltexts und setzen Open Source insofern mit Freeware auf eine Stufe. Doch weit gefehlt. Auch wenn Open Source einen konsequenten Community Ansatz in der (Weiter-)Entwicklung von Softwarebibliotheken und -programmen verfolgt, sind bei der Nutzung von Open Source Software zahlreiche Regeln zu beachten.
