Smoke drifts over ancient Jerusalem. The year is seventy of the common era. The Second Temple lies in ruins, and the center of Jewish life has vanished. In the ashes, a new form of leadership begins to take shape—one that will redefine what it means to live as a Jew for centuries to come.The destruction of the Second Temple was not only a historical trauma, but also a turning point for Jewish religious life. In the aftermath, the priestly rituals that once defined worship were gone. What emerged in their place was a community built around study, interpretation, and law—anchored by the authority of the rabbis. Orthodox Judaism traces its roots to this moment. From the perspective of its adherents, the Torah given at Sinai remains eternally binding, even as the world around it changes. The rabbis, inheritors of authority from the Temple priests, began to reshape Jewish life for a new age. Scholars such as Shaye J. D. Cohen point to the first through third centuries of the common era as the era when the rabbinic class and its core texts—the Mishnah and, later, the Babylonian Talmud—came into being.
