OS 1343: The Outdoor Aftermath of Helene

from The Outdoors Show

They wanted to spend this episode talking about what’s happening in the water and what’s coming up in the woods.  Hurricane Helene had different plans, however. It was almost impossible to ignore what so many people are dealing with in the wake of the storm all the way from the Florida Gulf Coast into Kentucky. Of course, those of us on the First Coast can be thankful we were spared the devastation…and have the good fortune to be able to pivot back to fishing!  There’s A LOT happening in the water, both good and bad.  Lots of mullet, but lots of ANGRY sharks. Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Keep CorrosionX handy for keeping your electronics and equipment from rusting or corroding. About $16 at Atlantic Coast Marine or West Marine. Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Make sure you order crab traps from Wishard Wire Company! Stone crab season begins October 15. Traps can be placed in water 10 days prior on 10/5/24 but can’t be tended to until opening day. Here’s your KirbyCo Builders, Inc cooking tip of the week from Mike and Fred: Mike says, “September to October is the best time to eat mullet. January-February not so much. Fall they are fat and full of roe, winter, the meat is white and a weird texture. Learned the hard way. Salt run is some of the best.” Fred agreed, and added, “I had mullet gizzards Monday night, kind of a pain to clean, taste like squid but 50 times better! When they’re full of roe they have no fat, have to get them when roe is just starting, will only be 1/2 inch long!” Facebook
