Overcomers Episode 3 – Nick Hugo, “Instead of saying why me? Say, what now?” -Jake Romo.
from Motivate with Coach Camp · host Coach Camp
My third and final guest in my series on overcomers is a former student of mine and current firefighter/paramedic for the Shelby County fire department. Nick was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at the age of 5. Fearing the difficulties he may face in public schools, Nick’s parents opted to home school. Nick’s parents were very supportive and tried to seek help to better manage his tics. After years of therapists and medications not helping, Nick had capitulated to the idea that he would never be able to function like other people. He tells his story of how he had learned to lean on his condition as the reason why he wasn’t capable of doing different things. However, his father always told him “the only thing holding you back is your attitude.” This statement finally rang true to Nick when he embarked on a back country trip involving white water rafting, hiking, and overall outdoor survival at the age of 18. Being placed in real survival situations that required him to complete the task, helped Nick to realize that it truly was his attitude that had always been holding him back. I know that you will enjoy his story and maybe even find an inner strength that you never knew you possessed.
