Overcoming Giants and Finding Peace: David’s Victory & The High Priestly Prayer (Day 146)
from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell
How do we find courage when facing the giants of life? Today we reach the thrilling climax of the battle in the Valley of Elah. In 1 Samuel, young David refuses the king’s heavy armor, stepping out with a simple sling, five smooth stones, and absolute confidence in the name of the Lord. His historic victory over Goliath catapults him into national fame, sparking a deep covenant friendship with Jonathan, but also igniting a dangerous, murderous jealousy in King Saul.In the Gospel of John, Jesus prepares His disciples for their own upcoming battles with the world. He promises that the arrival of the Holy Spirit will guide them into all truth, comforts them with the reality of his resurrection joy, and closes the Upper Room Discourse with a definitive battle cry of hope: "In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."Today’s Scripture:📖 1 Samuel 17:38–18:30 – David rejects Saul’s armor, confronts Goliath, and defeats him with a single stone to the forehead, routing the Philistine army. Afterward, Saul brings David into his permanent service. Jonathan forms an immediate, deep covenant friendship with David, stripping off his own royal robes to honor him. However, as crowds chant that David has slain his ten thousands compared to Saul's thousands, Saul grows paranoid, repeatedly trying to spear David and setting dangerous marriage traps using his daughters, Merab and Michal.📖 John 16:5–17:5 – Jesus explains that it is to the disciples' advantage that He leaves so the Helper can come to convict the world. He promises that their current sorrow will soon turn to joy, just like a woman giving birth. As He transitions from teaching the disciples to praying to the Father, Jesus opens His High Priestly Prayer, asking to be glorified so that He may give eternal life to all who believe.📖 Psalm 68:1–6 – A triumphal processional psalm celebrating God's majestic power. The speaker cries out, "Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered!" while praising Him as a father to the fatherless, a protector of widows, and the One who sets the solitary in families.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT📧 Questions?
