A Dizzy Gillespie i Charlie Parker se'ls atribueix merescudament el desenvolupament del bebop i el jazz modern. "Dizzy després d'aparèixer a l'orquestra de Fran Fairfax el 1935, l'orquestra de Teddy Hill el 1937, l'orquestra de Cab Calloway el 1939, va aparèixer el 1939 en una data de gravació a la també orquestra de Lionel Hampton, tocant un solo en una melodia titulada 'Hot Mallets', que molts observadors creuen que és el primer exemple gravat del que més tard s'anomenaria bebop". El 1945 Gillespie va formar la seva pròpia big band, amb un èxit comercial limitat, i que aleshores mostrava el concepte de big band bebop com una forma moderna i singular de jazz. A mitjans i finals de la dècada de 1940, Dizzy va participar en un moviment anomenat música afrocubana. Va portar elements llatins i africans a l'escena del jazz. Una de les seves cançons més famoses que va contribuir a aquest moviment va ser "Manteca". "En la història del desenvolupament de la trompeta de jazz, el lloc de Gillespie va ocupar el segon lloc només després del de Louis Armstrong". La carrera de Gillespie rarament va deixar de mostrar un pensament fresc, il·lusió i una vitalitat exuberant. Dizzy va crear un llegat per inspirar músics a seguir. Aquest llegat musical el resumeix millor ell mateix quan va dir: "Charlie Parker i jo vam establir les bases de tota la música que s'està tocant ara... La nostra música serà la música clàssica del futur". Tot aquest inici i període tan vital de la història del jazz i de Dizzy és el que nosaltres escoltarem avui al llarg dels anys 1946-1948. El final del nostre programa estara format pel concert en directe que va realitzar el cantant Johnny Hartman al "Sometime", KIchijyoji Tokyo, Japó el 13 d’octubre del 1977 amb companyia del pianista Roland Hanna i el contrabaixista George Mraz.
