from Foundations of Christian Thought · host Christian Thought
Part 5 Metaphysics of Man Chapter 30 Freedom Section c. Freedom of Choice: Determinism This section discusses the different types of determinism that are most prevalent: i) physiological - the will is determined by the makeup of the material body ii) sociological - man is determined by cultural values iii) economic - man is determined by the economic infrastructure and his position within it iv) fatalistic - man is determined by fate (luck) v) theological - God determines the choice of man vi) psycho-analytical - man is determined by a combination of libido and accumulated experience All of which offer man an escape from his basic moral responsibility by appealing to two types of evidence: i) that of self-conscience whereby man can verify within himself that when he chooses, he could have very well chosen otherwise ii) the universal acceptance of a moral code and legal responsibility. Both of which undergird the proper functioning of society which if ignored through determinism will result in the breakdown in society.
