from Foundations of Christian Thought · host Christian Thought
Part 6 Ethics Chapter 37 The Common Good Section g. Ordination of Each Single Substance to the Common Good This section discusses the relation between the common and the proper good. i) The common good is more universal. The proper good is the peculiar manner by which each unique person reaches the common good (God). ii) The common good is communicable. The proper good is non-transferrable, non-communicable as it is unique to the substance of each thing. iii) The common good is the good of the entire order. The proper good is the good of each part, as ordained towards God, thus the proper good is part of the common good through its ordering towards God and therefore the proper good is not limited to its individuality.
