René Descartes (1596-1650) Descartes is the first important modern philosopher as he lays out the foundational characteristics which is found in  most modern thinkers. This discussion culminates in the realization from the modernist immanentistic thinking comes either materialism or idealism each of which makes a rejection of a particular fundamental side of reality.  The cartesian ethics which came from it can be summarized in the following principles: i) reason can know God and all that is in man (rationalism) ii) the only virtue we should practice is firmness in following our own reason (voluntarism) iii) we should not wish what is impossible, and should not repent from our errors (humanism)
