Hace casi un siglo, en 1937, el paleontólogo británico Robert Broom describió un enorme primate, Dinopithecus, a partir de los restos fósiles encontrados en una cueva de Sudáfrica. Semejante a un babuino, era sin embargo más grande: se estima que las hembras pesaban una media de 31 kilos, mientras que los machos rondaban los 50 kilos, y algunos podían alcanzar los 77. Dinopithecus vivió en África entre finales del Plioceno y principios del Pleistoceno, hace unos 2,5 millones de años. Sus restos fósiles se han encontrado en Sudáfrica y en Etiopía. El cráneo es similar al de los babuinos modernos. No se han encontrado huesos del tronco ni de las extremidades de Dinopithecus, así que no sabemos cual era su modo de locomoción.
