Las causas del cambio climático parecen estar muy claras: ha sido la actividad humana, causante de ingentes emisiones de CO2 a la atmósfera, la responsable. Algunos expertos han realizado cálculos que intentan estimar qué sería necesario hacer para conseguir una economía de emisiones cero de CO2 de aquí a 2050. Uno de esos calculos comienza con el dato de que, actualmente, el mundo quema cada día 12.000 millones de toneladas de combustibles fósiles. De aquí al 2050 solo quedan unos 11.000 días, por lo que cada día deberíamos reducir el consumo de combustibles fósiles en más un millón de toneladas, incluso frente a una demanda creciente debido al incremento de la población. Es evidente que para, primero, detener y, si fuera posible, revertir este estado de cosas, en primer lugar, debemos detener las emisiones de CO2 a la atmósfera y, en segundo lugar, tendremos que capturar y retirar de la atmósfera el exceso de CO2 emitido si deseamos volver a la temperatura media que el planeta poseía antes de la revolución industrial.
