Parashat Bereshit in English
from Efrayimbenshalom
Bereshit (בראשית) is the first word of the Torah. Jajamim asks why HaKadosh BaruchHu chose to begin with this word? It is said that Boré Olam selected the letter Bet (ב) as the initial letter of Creation. The Torah starts with the letter "Bet" and not with the "Aleph" (which is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet) for a few reasons. Here are some of them: The letter Bet (ב) has three closed sides, but the fourth is open. This shows that to understand the Torah properly, you look at it from within. Without committing to its values and practicing its precepts, you won't understand its real message. Meanwhile, the letter Aleph (א) has four sides open to the outside. This is because it represents Emunah in Boreh Olam, and this value can be grasped from all angles. This allows us to discover and admire evident and constant proofs of the Existence of Elohim!
