Parashat Emor, from the Hebrew “Speak,” focuses on holiness as it applies to time and sacred service. It is not merely a code of conduct for the Cohanim, but a roadmap for elevating the physical through restraint and intentionality. The name of the portion begins with a command to the Kohen: "Speak to the Cohanim and tell them." Speech is the power of Maljut, the realm of manifestation. By saying, “Speak and tell them,” we are taught that a spiritual leader must connect elevated thought with spoken words in order to sweeten judgments. Holiness is not a passive state; it is built through the power of our words. The first section deals with the restrictions placed upon the Cohanim: they must not become ritually impure through contact with the dead, whom they may marry, and how they are to live in holiness. The Kohen represents the sefirah of Jésed. Death is the ultimate expression of separation and severe judgment. In order for the channel of abundance to flow into the world, the Kohen must remain separated from forces of interruption so that he may serve as a pure conduit of eternal life. Emor describes the cycle of the appointed festivals. These festivals are not merely historical commemorations but spiritual windows.
