This parashah provides a comprehensive overview of the regulations about Parah Adumah, also known as the red cow. These laws of ritual purification are applicable in the event of contact with the deceased. Following the 40-year journey through the desert, Miriam passed away and was laid to rest in Kadesh. The people express dissatisfaction with the lack of water, which had previously been provided to them miraculously on Miriam's merit. Aaron and Moses intercede on behalf of the people. The Elohim instructed them to assemble the people at Merivah and to speak to a specific rock, requesting that it release water. The letter Alef (א) is derived from the name Adam and signifies the study of the Talmud Torah. Dálet (ד) is the fourth letter of the Hebrew alphabet and represents the four elements that comprise the material composition of the human body: earth, water, air, and fire. Mem (ם) is a closed letter at the end of the word Adam, mem sofit. It refers to Olam Habah, which corresponds to the future world. This is a world that is closed to our physical eyes. Upon Mashiach's return, the eyes of the soul will be opened, allowing contemplation of the Olam haruchanit, the spiritual world. In summary, the Torah, represented by the letter Aleph, enables a person to transcend the physical aspect and reach the world to come.
