VAYIGASH Even from his state of slavery, Joseph became governor of Egypt and used his human qualities for the good of humanity, in order to lift the world out of famine. Despite separation and isolation, he preserved his identity intact. Joseph managed to get his brothers to bring Benjamin to Egypt against Jacob's initial resistance, later holding him hostage. His brothers interceded for him, and Judah even offered to remain imprisoned in Benjamin's place. At that moment, Joseph revealed his identity. Benjamin was Joseph's favorite brother; they were sons of the same mother, Rachel. Forgiveness is a virtue, but often the person forgiven is seen as magnanimous (elevated), while the person who is forgiven is humiliated and sometimes even feels guilt.
