If they are blocked or plugged up, the power of the words is lost.  Jesus cast a spirit of Deaf and Dumb out of the child who was plagued with a spirit that overtook him, casting him into the fire and water to torment him.   So many of us, Christians included, are plagued with these insidious spirits that snatch and neutralize the words and conversations out of our ears, and we don't even realize it.
