El 20 de diciembre de 1963 fallecía en Bucarest Paul Constantinescu, compositor rumano de origen hebreo nacido en Ploiesti. Constantinescu comenzó sus estudios musicales en su ciudad natal, continuando en el Conservatorio de Bucarest, donde estudió armonía, composición, contrapunto e historia de la música. Desde 1933 hasta 1935, perfeccionó sus estudios musicales en Viena con Franz Schmidt y Joseph Marx. Fue profesor de armonía, contrapunto y composición en la Academia de música religiosa, entonces Escuela Militar de Música y en el Conservatorio de Bucarest. Tuvo una actividad multilateral como violinista, director de orquesta, compositor y profesor. También fue asesor del Ministerio de Cinematografía, dependiente del Ministerio de Propaganda, en Bucarest y en la radiodifusión rumana. Sus composiciones intentan recuperar el folklore de su país. Escribió sobre prácticamente todos los géneros de la música clásica, desde la ópera hasta el lieder, desde el ballet hasta la sinfonía, bandas sonoras y oratorios. Hoy escucharemos de este interesante compositor la pieza Olteneasca interpretada por la Orquesta Sinfónica de la Radio Rumana bajo la dirección de George Georgescu.
