Performative Queerness Among Black Gay Men

from Just Drawz - The Podcast · host Just Drawz

In this episode, we dig into performative queerness—how queer identity is expressed, curated, and sometimes judged in today’s world. We talk social media, authenticity, fast fashion, family dynamics, and the pressure to perform for both online and offline audiences. It’s a real conversation about identity, expression, and the power of being true to yourself—even when the world’s watching.  We wrap up with ways one can unlearn and check one’s own performativity as well. “Just… Unclear for Queer”Shout-out to Judith Butler: Queer performativity is rooted in her work where she argued that gender is not something one is, but something one does through repeated acts. When we put that in terms of queer theorising, it is about delinking gender, sex and sexuality (Lind, 2009) by showing that these elements do not have a linear relationship to each other based on biology. So, for the purpose of this episode, we wanted to address what her work in ‘gender performativity’ means for queerness today.Lind, A. (2009). Governing intimacy, struggling for sexual rights: Challenging heteronormativity in the global development industry. Development, 52(1), 34-42._______________________________Takeaways: - Queer identity is constructed through behavior, not fixed by nature.- Social media shapes—and often pressures—how queerness is presented.- Authenticity is essential, but hard to maintain in curated spaces.- Style and self-expression are valid forms of queer identity.- Family, community, and social dynamics impact how we show up.- Unlearning performance can lead to more honest, grounded queerness._______________________________Listen to Our Spring 2025 Playlist:The Just Drawz Podcast Presents: Cheekz & Beatz Vol. I [Spring 2025]YouTube Music:https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTzaf4yOmTtwLZ43_C5MK5NDZtu49A_mg&si=qclBkWFenao4M9gUSpotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2dkJDkB8ekDK1Rc4s8bZtw?si=aec470a275b2490dApple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/the-just-drawz-podcast-presents-cheekz-beatz-vol-i/pl.u-MDAWvo6uevJMem_______________________________Hosts:DMC:https://www.instagram.com/kklothesminded/https://x.com/DMCuretonJeff:https://www.instagram.com/jefflevelsup/https://www.x.com/jefflevelsup/https://bsky.app/profile/jefflevelsup.bsky.socialhttps://www.tiktok.com/@jefflevelsupSpill - @jeffevelsup- https://spill.com/p/jefflevelsup?id=756127e9-e8f8-472f-8d94-062e3d4e9148_______________________________Just Drawz on Social Media:https://www.instagram.com/thejustdrawzpodcast/https://x.com/TheJustDrawzhttps://www.tiktok.com/@thejustdrawzpodcasthttps://bsky.app/profile/justdrawz.bsky.social_______________________________Edited and produced by:https://www.instagram.com/jefflevelsup/https://www.x.com/jefflevelsup/https://bsky.app/profile/jefflevelsup.bsky.social_______________________________Music:"Neptunes" - by Black Assassin -https://www.instagram.com/blk_assassin/_______________________________Keywords:Keywordsvulnerability, healing, self-discovery, toxic masculinity, emotional strength, mental health, LGBTQ+, black and brown men, chosen family, personal growth, masculinity, queerness, self reflections, self improvement, self love, success, influence, _______________________________#JustDrawz#blackpodcast #blackpodcasters #spotify #applepodcasts #podcast #blackpodcaster #spotifypodcast #youtube #applepodcasts #youtubepodcast #gaypodcasts #LGBTpodcast #blackmen #blackgaymen #blackpodcastnetwork #gaymen #fypシ #fyp #fypシviralシfyp #selflove #success #masculinity #queerness #liberation #personalgrowth #healing #mentalhealth #lgbtq #LGBTQIA #gayfem #masc4masc #fem4fem #mascformasc #gayconversations #gendertheory #queerissues #masculinity #masc4masc #queer4queer #femme #butchqueen #gayconversations #judithbutler
