What I could have never known however, was that I would pick up a bass at 14 and be quickly shuffled from shaping my calluses playing scales in a dark bedroom to a well-lit band pit two years later in front of a sold out crowd of 1500, performing a full double album's worth of memorized material for a theatrical production of Pink Floyd's "The Wall". Shortly after enrolling at Rutgers, I discovered partnered vernacular swing jazz, Lindy Hop, and put down the bass to try on a pair of dance shoes. A year later I began taking ballet and modern classes at Rutgers in an effort to catch up after a lifetime of two left feet, but still unsure of how far I wanted to go while struggling to hold a beat and keep my back straight. There was little room for self-doubt left after my dance teacher assured me that "The world needs more dancers," a mantra that I remind myself of daily, as well as other artists around me who have dealt with imposter syndrome. Four years later, I found myself as a dance scene leader and venue owner in State College & converted the ground floor of our house into an informal venue for Lindy Hop and other social dance communities in State College, and eventually burlesque and vaudeville soirees. We also helped to train Ten Brown Shoes, a house band made up of exceptional jazz musicians from Penn State into a group of exceptional swing jazz musicians who knew what it meant to truly play for dancers. July 2022, moving from NY to Charleston, by joining a world-class music venue where I can use my experience working with, advocating for, and booking musicians in order to curate unforgettable performance nights for both artist and audience. At the moment though, I'm happily biding my time cutting meat with a truly flash in the pan crew of butchers, acting as a booking agent and editor for up and coming R&B artist Drananda Summons, and learning how to dance again. ** ** Conversations with Calvin ALSO ON AUDIO: SPOTIFY http://spoti.fi/3bMYVYW GOOGLE PODCASTS http://bit.ly/38yH3yP
