Mariam S. Apple Podcasts Google Podcasts Spotify Amazon/Audible   Highlights from the interview Mariam and I met on LinkedIn.  What interested me most about her is that she is pursuing dual degrees:  PharmD and MS PGX.     How did Mariam hear about the dual degree program at Manchester University College of Pharmacy? Mariam learned about it in her P1 year at Manchester.  She was interested in the potential advantages a dual degree offered.     How do PharmD/MS PGX dual degree students fit all their coursework in? Summer classes after P1, P2, and P3 years.   Can Post-Baccalaureate students (like me!) also enroll in the MS PGX Program? Yes!     Growing up with Pharmacogenomics In addition to her MS PGX coursework, some PGX is also taught in her PharmD academics.  To her, pharmacogenomics has always been part of her formal education.  As a 2001, BS Pharm graduate, I had a much different experience.  I learned about PGX well after graduation (through CE), but Mariam is "growing up" with it.     P4 Rotations in a dual degree program Mariam is completing ten rotations.  Each is 4 weeks long.  2 PGX-based rotations (8 weeks in total) are required for her MS PGX Degree.  They also count toward her PharmD Degree.  Mariam worked at Patients Choice Laboratories in Indianapolis, IN for 8 weeks.  Among other duties, she completed hands-on tasks, such as processing patient samples, genotyping, putting information into translation software, interacting with healthcare providers over the phone, and generating reports for patients and healthcare professionals.   Who trained Mariam during her rotations? Scientists (Foreign Pharmacy Grads) with MS PGX Degrees from Manchester University.     Favorite part of the 8-week PGX rotation Reading, interpreting, and comparing PGX test results.  Applying the information to drug selection.     Once-in-a-lifetime report According to Mariam, your genes will never change.  PGX information can be used to select drug therapy for a patient's entire life.  It's a once-in-a-lifetime report.  One day, carrying around PGX information will become as essential to healthcare as carrying around a medication list.     Why did Mariam choose pharmacy school? "Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave."  Mariam's father emphasized pursuing dreams and education while remaining humble.  She credits him with nurturing a love of science and medicine in her everyday life.  He was a pharmacist overseas, but he did not pursue his pharmacist license after immigrating to the US.  Mariam is a first generation American.  She was born and raised in Dearborn, MI. Both of Mariam's parents emigrated from the Middle East in the 1990's.    What's next for Mariam?
