On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is speaking to Kelly Buchanan from Dimestore Dolls, after his return to the States after being in Europe for Hellfest. Pipeman starts by telling us that Kelly and his Daughter had similar experiences with having a brain aneurism and lost her motor functions. With a 20% chance to live and a 5% chance of recovering her motor functions, she defied the odds and made a full recovery, similar to Kelly. Kelly’s experience was from playing street hockey when she took a slapshot to the head and had a traumatic brain injury, but luckily, the damage was micro tears to the brain stem that were attaching to the spinal cord, and not the spinal cord itself, meaning she was able to learn to walk again.Kelly talks about how she has accepted her life would be different after her injuries, and it is, however she is still able to do the things which bring her the most joy and it’s a surreal feeling to her to be able to be making music Talking about her music, Kelly describes it as fun. She explains how you can really hear the fun her band is having in playing, experimenting with lots of genres and harmonies, all while having a laugh. Kelly tells us about how she got the itch to do music, telling us she started playing piano at 3 and started writing properly when she was in her early teens as a way to cope with her father passing away. After escaping nearly being sold into a sex trafficking ring and being bed ridden with a brain injury, she had a lot of time to think and decided she wanted to make a positive impact in the world, and so chose music after considering diplomacy.
