Una imagen tomada en 2009 por la sonda japonesa Kaguya reveló la existencia de un agujero oscuro y profundo en la región Marius Hills de la superficie lunar. Desde entonces se han descubierto ya casi trescientas de estas formaciones, denominados cráteres de subsidencia, cráteres de pozo o, como se dice en habla inglesa, "pit crater". Un pit crater es una abertura en el suelo que conecta la superficie lunar con cavidades subterráneas o túneles excavados en tiempos remotos por flujos de lava. Gabriel López y Laura Parro, nuestros invitados en Hablando con Científicos, estudian estos pozos lunares con el objetivo de utilizarlos como puertas de entrada hacia espacios subterráneos donde instalar bases lunares. Allí, las paredes y techos de roca protegerán a los astronautas contra la radiación y los micrometeoritos, además de proporcionarles un ambiente más benigno, libre de las variaciones de temperatura extremas que existen en la superficie.
