PODCAST: A POLITICAL EARTHQUAKE JUST HIT WESTERN NEW YORK: THE FALL OF THE ESTABLISHMENTFor years, Jeremy controlled nearly every lever of power available to a county chairman. He had the endorsements, the institutional backing, the fundraising network, the support of elected officials, and the support of the party establishment from top to bottom. Yet he still lost.And that matters.Jon Rivera is not exactly an outsider. He comes from a family deeply involved in politics. But what makes this remarkable is that he put it all on the line to challenge the party boss. Most people don’t do that. Most people wait their turn. Most people stay quiet. Most people don’t risk their future by taking on the people who control the system.Something bigger is happening, not just here but across the country. Voters are increasingly rejecting establishments that seem disconnected from their lives. Call it progressive, call it democratic socialist, call it whatever you want. What I hear from people is simpler than labels. They want healthcare as a right. They want a fair shot at the American Dream. They don’t want billionaires and trillionaires determining their future. They don’t want party insiders picking winners before voters ever get a chance to decide.I’ve fought Jeremy politically for a long time. But I never hated him.A week ago, I met with him for the first time in years. I already suspected he was going to lose. When I saw him, I saw a level of humility I hadn’t seen before. I could tell he had taken some hard hits. So I simply wished him luck.Politics is politics. It doesn’t have to be personal. Even if he wished me ill in the past, I don’t wish him ill now. I hope he has a great future and finds something meaningful to do next.But these positions were never supposed to be permanent or guaranteed. That’s why I believe in term limits. That’s why I believe power should change hands. Democracy is healthiest when new people, new ideas, and new energy have a chance to emerge.I’m excited to see what comes next. I’m excited to see Alissa Ellman take on Claudia Tenney. I’m excited to see new races, new candidates, and new debates about the future of our region.And if you’re a Republican reading this and thinking Democrats are crazy, remember: if you dislike the political dynasties that have existed in Erie County, you have your own political dynasties in Niagara County. The principle is the same.No person, faction, or organization should become so powerful that it cannot be challenged.Fresh ideas matter. Competition matters.
