Years ago, I argued that the Democratic Party needed to embrace healthcare as a human right. “Affordable healthcare” was never enough. I warned that corporate politics was hollowing out our democracy and that local party machines were shutting out independent voices, discouraging debate, and rewarding loyalty over ideas.Now, a lot of people are catching up.But here’s the thing: I don’t want to replace one political machine with another. I don’t want one closed establishment giving way to a different closed establishment.I want debate. I want competition. I want open primaries. I want a Democratic Party—and a democracy—that welcomes new ideas instead of fearing them.I believe the party is finally moving in the right direction.
