It’s not.A data center is basically a giant warehouse full of computers. Thousands and thousands of servers stacked in racks, sucking up enormous amounts of electricity and generating huge amounts of heat. That’s why they need industrial cooling systems, backup power systems, and often rows of diesel generators.And here’s what they don’t tell you.Those cooling systems make noise. Not a little noise. A constant industrial whine. A screeching, humming, buzzing sound that can travel for miles depending on the design and weather conditions. Go talk to communities that already live near large data centers. The complaints are everywhere.The jobs? Usually far fewer than advertised. Once they’re built, many operate with surprisingly small staffs.The power demand? Massive.The land they consume? Massive.The tax breaks they ask for? Massive.Now ask yourself this: Why would we put something like that next to one of the most beautiful natural wonders on Earth?Niagara Falls should be investing in tourism, entertainment, parks, culture, restaurants, hotels, and attractions that bring people to the waterfront—not industrial computer warehouses surrounded by fences, security cameras, and diesel generators.I’m not anti-technology. I’m using technology right now.I’m saying location matters.Put data centers on brownfields. Put them in industrial zones.
