And before that, of course, he had brought Timothy along with him. And Timothy's mother and grandmother had raised him in the scriptures. But he had a non-believing father. And so Paul took him along as a companion.
And many years later, Paul is in prison. And this is the very last letter that Paul writes. And he knows that he is not going to get out of prison. Except in a coffin.
He knows that he was in Ephesus. And the last time that he was in Ephesus. He knows that he was in Ephesus. In Acts the 20th chapter it tells us that he gathered all the elders from all the different house churches in the city together.
And he warned them of their responsibility to be shepherds and to be faithful. And then he predicted that even from among the elders, there would arise false teachers. And they would lead the sheep astray. And it had happened.
And Paul mentions two of those false teachers in the second chapter. And there were people who are saying our experience and our passion toward the Lord is so great, it's that the resurrection has already happened. And even though I didn't know the words today, I appreciated this one. And there's great joy and tremendous things that happen because of worship.
But no worship service. But no worship service. No nuclear is the resurrection. No.
No. No. The resurrection is so far beyond what we experience now. But we already have the resurrection because we have experiences.
And of course, it's a lot like our modern world. People then were choosing ideas. They picked this idea from the Greeks. They picked this idea from the Far East.
They picked this from the Jews. They picked this from philosophy. And on they go. And they buzzed it all together and they make something up.
Sounds like internet, doesn't it? And Paul is telling Timothy. I don't have long. But you've got to carry on.
You have to do your job. And you have to be faithful. Now when I was a little boy. Both of my grandfathers died before I was born.
But both of my grandmothers died when I was about four years old. The war interrupted my parents' life. Now, I barely remember my grandmothers. But I remember one time at my grandmothers.
We had an old radio. She didn't even have a TV yet. And we're trying to get a program on that old radio. Now, it's not like today where there are a hundred channels.
And you know what would happen? You move the knob and what would you get? We call it static. We hear a voice.
And then it goes away. And you had two radio. And I want to use that image today. Now Paul says, well it's the last days.
It's the last days. And we're in the last days. And we're in the last days. In fact, first John says, we're in the last hour.
And we shouldn't be surprised that there's evil in the world. That's going to happen. We can't stop that from happening. But we have to tune our lives.
We have to hear the right things. To get on the channel. And the message comes through. How do you do that?
First of all, we have to tune out the noise. We have to get rid of the noise. There's all kinds of noise. The noise of crazy teachings.
And selfish attitudes. A world is full of selfishness. I took a course on marketing. And I could have titled it, how to appeal to people's selfishness.
How to appeal to people's ego. Paul says they're lovers of self. They're lovers of money. They're lovers of pleasure.
But you know the one thing they don't love? It's God. They don't love God. The only thing we have to love.
It's so funny. Our world is obsessed with self-esteem. We feel good about myself. We speak more about self-esteem because we have no self-esteem.
And we have no self-esteem because we do not believe in our culture. It's more true in American culture than any culture. We talk about self-esteem because we don't have any. And we don't have any because we don't believe that we're created by God as children of God.
You can't have healthy self-esteem. You don't believe that God made you? If you're just an animal trying to defeat other animals. You can't have self-esteem.
Not when the lights are out. And all of these selfish attitudes and crazy teachings and pride. Such easy, fushivy, or utchania, he gourdos. That's like static.
Get rid of that. And we must, you know, Paul is very clear. We must tune out those who make that noise. Paul says in verse 5 that they have the appearance of godliness.
But they deny the power. No, sotre, no, sotre, no, sotre, no, sotre. The real power of godliness. And he says avoid such people.
That's what he says. That's what he says. So we have to tune out the noise. We have to tune out those who make that noise.
I tease young people. It's not fair to them, but I tease them. I'm an old man now. If I was going to invest in a business, it would be a business that helps people with neck problems.
But the business is quite important. It's a great thing. It's a great thing. The next generation will be three inches shorter.
The next generation will be three inches shorter. Let me tell you something. Let me tell you something that will change your life. Turn off your phone.
And for 15 minutes a day, read the scripture. You can read the entire Bible. If you consistently do 15 minutes a day. The problem is, you're going to miss texts.
You're going to miss videos. Twitter feed will be missed. I know that's a real challenge today. If you had told me 30 years ago before this technology developed.
I would have asked you to read the video. That people can't find 15 minutes a day. I would have left. But today I know it's a real challenge.
And everything is trying to get you to keep your phone on all the time. But you need to turn out the noise and make it. Now as they say, nature hates a vacuum. And our spiritual nature hates vacuum too.
What do you feel that's faced with? I can't believe I'm pleading for young Christians. Give their day 15 minutes. 15 minutes.
But it's the truth. And of course, you have to tune in. To the truth. And that truth, it comes in many ways.
But the primary way it comes. It's through the scriptures. And Paul says that all scripture is given by inspiration of God. And it's like the human author has the lips and the tongue and so forth.
But God breathes it out through him. So that what is given to us is not just the words of Paul to Timothy 2000 years ago. But is God's word to us today. All scripture is given by inspiration of God.
And it's useful or profitable. For teaching the faith. For correcting us when we're wrong. For rebuking us when we are resistant.
And for training us to live the right way. And I tell you, the minister who baptised me. And disciples me when I was a young Christian. And I say an average preacher at best.
I spoke at his funeral. He taught me two things. They sing very simple. But they changed my life.
He taught me to pray every day. And I tell you, it will change your life. And he says, the ultimate result of all of what God has done through scripture is so. That the person of God, the man of God.
Maybe thoroughly equipped for every good work. So I think of equipping a soldier and he's got everything. He's got his uniform and he's got his protective vest. And he has his weapons.
And he has his ammunition. And he has his little food kit. He's got his He can go anywhere and do anything. Because he has been trained.
And that is what scripture does for us. If I try to predict when I was young what God would lead me into and through and out of. And you can't predict what God will lead you into and through and out of. He can take a full potion of Christ as well as a foolish man.
You know how I joke about this. You know, God is a terrible time manager. He's terrible. He waits until the last second.
He doesn't tell you anything. And he expects you to just go. You'll talk about this. That's God.
And it's great. And it's great. It's scary sometimes. Sometimes it's hard.
But it is great. And the scriptures, especially not just the scriptures, but especially the scriptures. They get you ready. Anything.
That is what God is going to call you to do. If you want God to speak to you, you've got to tune out the noise. And you've got to ignore those who make that noise. And you have to tune yourself in.
To the written word. Which produces the proclaimed word. And that points us to the incarnate word. Jesus Christ.
We don't memorize scripture. So we go around and say, wow, I've memorized scripture. We memorize scripture. We tune into it.
Because it gives us the message. And it points us to the one that the message is about. And that's who we have to point ourselves to and everyone else to. But we can only do that if we tune out the world.
We know more than a crime. And we can have the message. We know that we have to do that if we tune out the world. No.
We know that we can do that if we tune out the world.
