[PREVIEW] 🎙🧚♀️ #029 - Independence Day
from Commentary Fairy
If you woke up one morning, looked out the window and saw a 15-mile-wide alien spaceship hovering over you, what would you do? Exactly. You'd throw on this unauthorised audio commentary of Independence Day and spend the last 2-and-a-half hours of your life thinking "why do I hate myself?" The greatest alien invasion disaster movie of all time (small category) - 1996's Independence Day is just as thrilling today as it was on a mid-nineties Friday movie night over a plate of greasy fish and chips. Credit to an expertly crafted and still unmatched depiction of growing worldwide panic, a fantastic ensemble cast (including Will Smith becoming a movie star in real-time), S-tier effects sequences and an Oscar-deservy score from David Arnold that can put prickles on your goosebumps. The only thing that could make this movie less thrilling is if two idiots with a laptop recorded their own commenta-- oh for f@#*'s sake! Discussed in this episode: Buzz Aldrin's nuts the existential terror of the night sky fictitious Presidential perfection X-Files getting its butt whipped by karma terrifying sudden and inexplicable smoke detector beeping extra-terrestrial USA favouritism David Arnold's Grammy-winning (Oscar-should-have-wonning) score "exotic dancing" during a global disaster inadvertently saving one's life city-engulfing fireballs that considerately skip past tunnel alcoves to avoid frying stripper-child-labrador trios the US Military essentially proving the existence and significance of Area 51 by balking at its inclusion in the script knitted 90s blankets the Mothership staff having no reaction to the equivalent of Amelia Earheart's Lockheed Electra arriving in Hawaii in perfect nick alien software designed to be backwards-compatible beyond four decades butt-brains and Red Dwarf.
