[PREVIEW] 🎙🧚♀️ #049 - Spice World
from Commentary Fairy
One of Rita's favourite childhood popcorn (literally) flicks features not 1, but 5 spice-themed female British popstars. Now that's value! Our next 4 "random" films are actually connected, 🔌 as part of a really specific sub-genre. The name of that sub-genre is: A music artist (or music group in this case) that only did ONE narrative* feature film (*so not a concert movie) in which they were the lead character(s). ( usually abbreviated to Singulo-muso-fi ) The other classics in the genre that we'll be doing are Glitter (2001), Crossroads (2002) and 8 Mile (2002). Somewhere along the way we'll hopefully develop an hypothesis as to why these artists stopped after just one movie. Discussed in this episode: The Spice Girls ephemeral phenomenon, or ephemenomenon First name overlap??? Bloody hell! Which Spice Girl are you? The plausibility of an all-access-[Richard-E.]-Granted sub-VHS-quality amateur doco crew Cameos from stars who clearly all had teenage daughters at the time Leopard-print sleeping bag childhood trauma Richard E. Grant jumping on the opportunity to go maximum ham Aliens? ______ . Billie Eilish's Spice-Girls-sized historical blindspot This film's connection to The Void: Rebooted - Episode 6 - Boot Kampf, and the honour its must therefore feel Hootie and the Blowfish (but mostly Hootie) The 6th Spice Girl - musically-ungifted mostly ignored overdue pregnant roommate The mysterious, undisclosed origin of the Wannabe instrumental track The long-awaited No We're Not Dead You Idiot Reunion Tour Joe's brain getting Stephen Fried An entire nightclub of Billie Eilishes A script meticulously constructed from a list of things the Spice Girls wanted to do, which makes the scene where they throw two children into the Thames doubly eyebrow-raising (if you want to sync it up to the film, we hit PLAY @ 05:19)
