פרופ׳ ינאי עופרן התחיל את דרכו האקדמית בסדרת ניסיונות שלא תמיד הושלמו: הוא פתח דוקטורט בבלשנות, נטש אותו, החל דוקטורט נוסף במדעי המוח, ובסוף מצא את מקומו בביו־פיזיקה חישובית – תחום שבו השלים את הדוקטורט באוניברסיטת קולומביה. לאחר פוסט־דוקטורט בסטנפורד, חזר לארץ והקים מעבדה באוניברסיטת בר־אילן. משם נבט הרעיון שהפך ל–Biolojic Design – חברה המפתחת תרופות חדשניות נגד סרטן, אלרגיות ומחלות אוטואימוניות באמצעות בינה מלאכותית.מאז הקמתה גייסה החברה כ–30 מיליון דולר, אך יצרה ערך עסקי גדול פי חמישה דרך פרויקטים עם כמה מחברות הפארמה הגדולות בעולם. כיום מעסיקה החברה כמאה עובדים, מתוכם כשבעים במטה בנס ציונה, ומקדמת במקביל ארבע תרופות בשלבים מתקדמים של ניסויים קליניים.אבל מה שבאמת מניע את עופרן הוא לא גיוסים או עסקאות, אלא העובדה שתרופות שפותחו בחברה שלו כבר הצליחו לרפא חולי סרטן – ולהחזיר לילדים רבים בעולם את האפשרות להמשיך לחבק את אבא או אמא, שמהם כמעט נפרדו.
