I have recently been reading the book "How to talk so your child will listen & how to listen so your child will talk" and one of the concepts I discovered was the thought that punishment is a distraction.   As I was reflecting on it, I realized I couldn't agree more.   So often we are using punishment because we don't know what else to do, it's how we were raised, or we just don't want our kids to turn out "bad".   But, what is often actually happening is our child is not thinking about how sorry he/she is.
