在审讯定案之前，涉讼妇女通常要交由官媒暂时羁押。所谓官媒，是清代州县的官衙中，专门负责在定案之前关押涉讼妇女、为涉讼妇女验身验伤、以及运送押解女犯。此外，官媒还承办涉讼妇女的婚配问题，比如刑满释放的被强奸的，这些人的婚姻问题都由官媒解决。正因如此，官媒也成了清代买卖人口的合法中介。
