QuantumScape Just Landed Honda and Is Sitting on $859M — So Why Is the Stock Near All-Time Lows?
from Charged Alpha Stock Encyclopedia · host Colton Thomas
QuantumScape (QS) Q2 2026 — QuantumScape (QS), the solid-state lithium-metal battery developer, reported Q2 2026 (quarter ended June 30) on July 22: a GAAP net loss of $98.2M, or -$0.16/share (beat the -$0.18 estimate; improved from -$0.20 a year ago), and an adjusted EBITDA loss of $64.2M (~flat YoY). Crucially, QuantumScape remains PRE-REVENUE: it booked $0 GAAP revenue (some data feeds erroneously show ~$29.5M). What it actually reported was $10.8M of 'customer billings,' an operational metric it explicitly says is NOT revenue under GAAP. The real story is the balance sheet: $859M in cash + marketable securities and almost no debt, against a net burn near $56M/quarter — a runway well into ~2029. Q2 also brought real validation: a new multi-year Honda partnership (a 4th Top-10 OEM alongside Volkswagen's PowerCo), an amended PowerCo license, the Eagle Line pilot hitting >90% tool uptime (output doubling in H2), a QSE-5 shipment to a major American defense prime, and a reorg into three verticals — QSEV (EVs), QSDC (AI data centers), QSAS (aerospace/defense). Full-year adjusted-EBITDA-loss guidance was reiterated at $250-275M and capex cut to $27-37M. The stock has collapsed ~69% from a 52-week high near $19 to ~$5.87 (~44% YTD), a ~$3.6B market cap. Our reverse-DCF base case lands near $6 — roughly today's price — with a bear ~$2 and bull ~$12+. Our call: HOLD, 2/5. QuantumScape is the market's ultimate high-risk, high-reward battery moonshot — a pre-commercial company chasing the solid-state, anode-free lithium-metal cell that could reshape the electric car. Q2 2026 delivered genuine progress: a new multi-year Honda partnership (a 4th Top-10 automaker alongside Volkswagen's PowerCo), the Eagle Line pilot line hitting >90% tool uptime with output set to double in H2, a QSE-5 cell shipment to a major American defense prime, and a reorg into three verticals — EVs (QSEV), AI data centers (QSDC), and aerospace/defense (QSAS). The loss is narrowing (net loss $98.2M, -$0.16/share, a beat), and the balance sheet is a fortress: $859M in cash and marketable securities against ~$56M/quarter of net burn, a runway into ~2029. But here's the catch that defines the whole thesis — QuantumScape still has ZERO GAAP revenue (the ~$29.5M some feeds show is an error; the company reported $10.8M of 'customer billings' it explicitly says is not revenue). Volume commercial cells from PowerCo aren't expected until ~2028, the hyped ~$130M royalty prepayment is still milestone-gated and unpaid, and shareholders are diluted a little more each quarter. Strip out the cash and the market values the business at ~$2.8B — implying QuantumScape builds a royalty stream of ~$250-350M/year (100+ GWh of licensed production) by the early 2030s, a demanding bar. Our reverse-DCF: bear ~$2, base ~$6, bull ~$12+, prob-weighted ~$6 — right about the ~$5.87 price. The stock has already been cut ~69% from its $19 high, so a lot of hype is gone, but there's no floor below net cash and the outcome is binary. Our call: HOLD, 2/5 — a de-rated moonshot that's validated and funded but still pre-revenue. We're aligned with the Street's Hold, just a touch more cautious on value. Own it small, size it for a binary outcome, and wait for commercialization proof. Not financial advice. THE CALL: HOLD (2/5, A DE-RATED MOONSHOT — VALIDATED, FUNDED, BUT STILL PRE-REVENUE) — base-case value ~$6 vs ~$5.87 today. What to watch: hard commercialization proof would turn us more bullish — PowerCo triggering the ~$130M royalty prepayment, the Eagle Line hitting its output-doubling target, or a real AI-data-center or defense order landing; the risks to respect are a technical or manufacturing stumble, a slipping ~2028 timeline, or a large capital raise before revenue arrives, and with zero revenue there is no valuation floor below the ~$1.35/share of net cash — watch the milestones and the quarterly burn Also on YouTube: @ChargedAlpha DISCLAIMER: For informational and educational purposes only.
