Question 31: How should we treat good and bad people according to the Dharma?
from PRACTICE GUIDE FOR LAY PRACTITIONERS · host Janna Order Monastery
Answer: In reality, every person has a mix of good and bad qualities. Until we reach Arahantship and eliminate ignorance, ego, and afflictions, some negative aspects will remain. When we call someone good, we mean their positive traits outweigh the negative. However, we can make some basic distinctions:A good person doesn't intend to harm or deceive us and may offer help when needed.A bad person might have intentions to harm or deceive us.A good person can be influenced to become hostile toward us.A bad person can change and abandon their harmful intentions. In social settings, people often present themselves positively through smiles, polite words, and kind attitudes–what we call social etiquette. This makes it hard to discern someone's true color. Some divination methods can provide insights into a person's inherent qualities, which we can use as a reference. We can also observe how someone treats their family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to better understand them. If they treat others well, they're likely to treat us well too. If their behavior is inconsistent, they may not be reliable in their treatment of us either. As Dharma practitioners, we should prioritize compassion and always try to uplift others. We should learn from those more advanced and guide those less fortunate. With harmful people, we should be cautious while also trying to help them reform. We must avoid criticizing or speaking ill of others, as this could lead us to become like them. Instead, we should sincerely hope for their improvement. If we can't help someone change, we should keep our distance while still wishing them well.#Buddhism #SpiritualPractice #LayPractitioner #Dharma #Compassion #HumanNature #Wisdom #Mindfulness #Kindness #Karma
