PRACTICE GUIDE FOR LAY PRACTITIONERS
by Janna Order Monastery
Question 01: DO LAY PRACTITIONERS FACE GREATER CHALLENGES IN FOCUSING ON SPIRITUAL PRACTICE COMPARED TO MONASTICS DUE TO FAMILY LIFE CONSTRAINTS?Answer: Indeed, family life can present more obstacles to spiritual practice than monastic life. This is one of the reasons why all religions incorporate a monastic tradition dedicated to intensive, focused practice and preservation of teachings. However, circumstances are not always fixed. There may be times when monastics face challenges due to external factors, necessitating lay practitioners to intensify their practice to uphold and safeguard...

Question 100: WHAT IS THE PRIMARY ROLE OF LAY PRACTITIONERS?
Question 100: WHAT IS THE PRIMARY ROLE OF LAY PRACTITIONERS?Answer: Lay practitioners are supposed to be a good citizens, devoted Buddhists, useful neighbors considerably contributing to their community, exemplary role models in spiritual practice without ostentation, undisclosed beacons to promote moral values to those around them, sagacious guardians of the Three Noble Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha), etc. These numerous responsibilities are indeed demanding, especially when considering additional family obligations. However, the nature of life is suffering. To overcome suffering, we must be willing to endure even greater current challenges. We must diligently accumulate good deeds to build a robust launcher for supreme spiritual attainments and complete liberation.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 99: HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE TO BUILDING A BETTER WORLD...?
Question 99: HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE TO BUILDING A BETTER WORLD, MEANING HELPING MANY PEOPLE BECOME MORE VIRTUOUS?Answer: People are unvirtuous for the following reasons:- Innate wickedness; without needing to be taught, their minds already contain seeds of evil, growing up to do things that harm others and benefit themselves.- Because of seeking fame and fortune, they accept doing evil to gain them- To protect fame and fortune, they accept doing evil to keep them- In the name of protecting something noble, they accept doing evil- Not deeply understanding the Law of Karma, they keep misbehaving without considering the consequences- Large ego, easily offended, quick to anger, then do evil- For personal grudges or relationships, they can accept doing evil- Personal ambitions are too great, disregarding sin- Getting involved in criminal organizations and then being trained to become evil...They must see virtuous examples before them to admire; they must be persuaded to believe in the Law of Karma; they must have effective methods to eliminate thoughts of ambition, anger, selfishness, self-centeredness, and craving for fame and fortune; they must be trained in compassion, selflessness, and sacrifice to help others; they must practice meditation to tranquilize their minds to become virtuous,In general, transforming one person to become virtuous is quite exhausting, transforming many people to become virtuous is even more demanding, but if we give up and don't try, what will become of this world? If each person tries to reform themselves throughout their life to influence five people to become virtuous, it would already be a great help for this planet.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 98: WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE WORLD IF EVERYONE KNEW HOW TO PRACTICE SPIRITUAL CULTIVATION?
Question 98: WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE WORLD IF EVERYONE KNEW HOW TO PRACTICE SPIRITUAL CULTIVATION?Answer: The physical world is a convergence of many beings, including Those Who are Saints. Beings from lower realms are reborn into higher ones, and beings from higher realms can be reborn into lower ones. It's an incredibly sophisticated one.If a large number of people were to cultivate spiritually and be reborn into higher realms, beings from the animal realm would quickly take their place. As we know, beings from the animal realm carry many negative habits, which would spread negativity into the human realm, making it more inclined toward evil. This realm is, in fact, a challenging testing ground for human morality. Whether we like it or not, we must face the evils that surround us. We can either be corrupted by these evils, escape them by being reborn into another realm, or strive to improve this realm.- If we choose to give in to evil for survival, we will be reborn into realms of suffering after death.- If we choose to cultivate merit and be reborn into higher realms to escape the suffering and injustice of the human realm, that is also a valid choice.- If we wish to transform this human realm into a great school where all beings who are reborn here can learn the Dharma, we must endure great hardships and dedicate ourselves to teaching and spreading the Dharma widely. In this way, we can ensure that most humans become virtuous, and all beings who are reborn here can be transformed. As a result, the Earth will not be overwhelmed by evil and will remain a suitable place for beings to live for a long time. The choice is ultimately ours.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 97: WHAT SHOULD WE DO IF WE UNEXPECTEDLY DEVELOP PSYCHIC ABILITIES OR STRONG INTUITION AFTER...?
Question 97: WHAT SHOULD WE DO IF WE UNEXPECTEDLY DEVELOP PSYCHIC ABILITIES OR STRONG INTUITION AFTER ACHIEVING RESULTS IN MEDITATION?Answer: If we happen to develop psychic abilities, it's important to keep them to ourselves and not make them public. Sharing such information can reduce our spiritual growth and potentially hinder our practice. Highly accomplished meditation masters never brag about their psychic abilities, even if they have them. They only reveal these abilities when absolutely necessary. Many have had to leave their physical bodies behind to avoid the problems that come with displaying such abilities. When we're around someone with psychic abilities, we often feel uncomfortable because we worry they can read our minds. For this reason, meditation masters often pretend not to be aware of their abilities to help others feel more at ease. Their peaceful minds also make them less likely to show off, unlike ordinary people who frequently try to impress others with their accomplishments. We should follow their example and develop the qualities of humility and discretion.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 96: HOW CAN WE DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN SOMEONE WHO HAS ATTAINED BOTH MEDITATION ...?
Question 96: HOW CAN WE DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN SOMEONE WHO HAS ATTAINED BOTH MEDITATION AND ENLIGHTENMENT AND SOMEONE WHO HAS ONLY ATTAINED MEDITATION?Answer: Both individuals have achieved results in meditation, but they follow distinct paths:- Those who have only attained meditative states, not Sainthood, tend to focus on supernatural powers and personal freedom, while those who have attained both prioritize morality, especially perfect compassion for all beings.- Those who have only attained meditative states are more likely to be self-satisfied with their achievements and may express themselves through meditative phrases or poetry. In contrast, those who have attained Sainthood are more discreet and less likely to exhibit their attainments.- Those who have attained meditative states have broken free from the Hindrances but may not have eradicated the stubborn Fetters as thoroughly as those who have attained Sainthood. Therefore, the morality of those who have only attained meditative states may not be secured. We can only truly discern the difference by spending time with these individuals. Question 95: WHAT ARE THE FOUR FOUNDATIONS OF MINDFULNESS?
Question 95: WHAT ARE THE FOUR FOUNDATIONS OF MINDFULNESS?Answer: The Buddha taught the practice of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, which are four areas of focus or levels of contemplation: contemplation of the Body, Feelings, the Mind, and Truths.Through the Six Mindfulness Stages, practitioners develop sustained mindfulness. From this state, they become acutely aware of their body, observing and experiencing it as impermanent, impure, and subject to suffering. They can perceive the constant activity and tension within every cell of their body.As the mind deepens in stillness, right with such the body, practitioners perceive an intangible field of sensations within the body, called a mass of Feelings, aka a mass of awareness. Practitioners no longer see the physical body but realize this intangible mass of Feelings, appreciating the fleeting nature of pleasant and unpleasant variations. In deeper states of meditation, practitioners observe the abyss Mind within this mass of awareness. This is the source of all perceptions and actions. Without vigilance and constant reminders of ignorance and defilements, one may mistakenly identify this Mind as the enlightened one of the Buddha. At the ultimate level of meditation, practitioners recognize there is not a self within. They perceive the ultimate truth, or Dharma, which encompasses the universe, the Law of Karma, rebirth, the three realms and the six paths, the Four Noble Truths, etc., all at once, all in one.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 94: WHAT IS THE ENTRY INTO RIGHT ECSTASY?
Question 94: WHAT IS THE ENTRY INTO RIGHT ECSTASY?Answer: There are four levels of Right Ecstasy: First Jhana, Second Jhana, Third Jhana, and Fourth Jhana. After a long period of cultivating Right Mindfulness, and with sufficient merit, a practitioner can enter the first level of Right Ecstacy, known as First Jhana. 'Sơ' (Sơ thiền) doesn't mean 'superficial' in this context; this Sino-Vietnamese word simply means 'first' or 'initial.' At this stage, practitioners will realize that during the previous stage of mindfulness, they were still making a conscious effort to maintain their focus, even though the mind seemed relatively calm. However, in First Jhana, there's no longer any effort involved. The mind becomes completely still and effortless, without any intentional actions. Yet, subtle thoughts or vague ideas related to the practice may still arise slightly and harmlessly.A characteristic of First Jhana is the absence of unwholesome states of mind and sensual desires (release of sensual desires, release of unwholesome states). Upon death, practitioners who attain the First Jhana are reborn in the Form Realm (corresponding to the state of release from sensual desires). Nevertheless, practitioners must continue to intentionally contemplate ‘the deep-seated ignorance and defilements within’ to prevent unnecessary pride.Second, Third, and Fourth Jhanas are even higher states that we admire and aspire to attain through our practice.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 93: WHAT SHOULD WE DO WHEN WE EXPERIENCE MINDFULNESS IN OUR DAILY LIFE?
Question 93: WHAT SHOULD WE DO WHEN WE EXPERIENCE MINDFULNESS IN OUR DAILY LIFE?Answer: When we experience mindfulness, it indicates that we haven't yet reached a state of complete concentration where all thoughts cease. Many subtle thoughts still run in the background, even though our mind appears clear, spacious, and calm. The first thought that often arises when the mind becomes mindful is self-congratulation, a belief that we've achieved a high level of spiritual attainment. Some people might even equate this state of mindfulness with the enlightened mind of a Buddha. However, if we understand the three types of foundations (Noble, ordinary, and inferior), we'll feel fear rather than joy when experiencing mindfulness. Even those with the inferior foundation can experience mindfulness; people of the ordinary foundation can also experience it; and the Noble foundation experience a very high level of mindfulness. There's a risk that the mindfulness we experience belongs to the inferior foundation which is unstable and uncertain. It may come and go, and we might spend our whole life struggling to avoid falling into lower realms without necessarily attaining enlightenment. Therefore, we should use this mindfulness to remind ourselves that we're still an ordinary or inferior being. If we don't firmly remind ourselves of this, the thought of self-congratulation will destroy all the good deeds we've accumulated.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 92: IS IT OKAY TO SKIP MEDITATION SESSIONS WHEN WE’RE TIRED, SICK, OR OVERWORKED?
Question 92: IS IT OKAY TO SKIP MEDITATION SESSIONS WHEN WE’RE TIRED, SICK, OR OVERWORKED?Answer: The Buddha addressed this question by stating that one should meditate even more diligently when tired, sick, or traveling. We should view daily meditation as being as essential as breathing or life itself. It should be treated as sacred and never interrupted, regardless of the obstacles we face. Skipping even once may lead to a habit of skipping more often, making it challenging to regain our unwavering dedication. In reality, even with diligent practice, we may not see immediate results before accumulating sufficient merit. However, we must persist in our daily practice. When we've accumulated enough merit, the reward will be spiritual awakening, not worldly fame or fortune. While fame and fortune aren't inherently negative, they can be double-edged swords. Their allure can be so tempting that we might lose sight of our goal of enlightenment.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 91: HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN UNWAVERING DILIGENCE IN OUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE AND AVOID LAZINESS AND INCONSISTENCY?
Question 91: HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN UNWAVERING DILIGENCE IN OUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE AND AVOID LAZINESS AND INCONSISTENCY?Answer: Each day, we should pay our respects to the Buddha and make a commitment to practice diligently and consistently. We can plead with the Buddha to bless us with boundless diligence. By maintaining this practice for many years, we will develop a strong and steadfast practice. However, this diligence is also supported by several other virtues:- Absolutely profound obeisance for the Buddha- Always ready to assist others when they need it, without making excuses- Persistently willing to take on difficult tasks to lighten the burden for others- Consistently motivating and inspiring others to persevere in their practice and good deeds- Steadily nurturing deep, vast, and enduring compassion- Sustainably maintaining unwavering loyalty and never betraying others. Those who possess boundless diligence and overcome numerous obstacles will find that their words carry great persuasive power due to an inexplicable, invisible force.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 90: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PRINCIPAL AND TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF MEDITATION PRACTICE?
Question 90: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PRINCIPAL AND TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF MEDITATION PRACTICE?Answer: Meditation practice encompasses both principal and technical aspects.Principal aspect: We engage in part of this aspect when we deliberately contemplate concepts to cultivate mindfulness. This might include reflecting on life's impermanence, the illusory nature of the self, or the flawed nature of the body and mind, etc. Technical aspect: We engage in part of this aspect when we subtly keep our breath Slow–Little–Gentle, and focus our attention on particular areas like the chest, abdomen, or lower abdomen.By integrating both principal and technical aspects, along with the invisible merit, we aim to develop and maintain mindfulness, ultimately leading to true concentration.Typically, beginners often rely on contemplative means to stimulate mindfulness, while more experienced practitioners (solely) use them to maintain a calm state. However, even when the mind is tranquil, it's crucial to continue reflecting on our ‘deep-seated ignorance and impurities’ to counteract pride.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 89: WHAT SHOULD WE DO WHEN WE FEEL DROWSY DURING MEDITATION?
Question 89: WHAT SHOULD WE DO WHEN WE FEEL DROWSY DURING MEDITATION?Answer: Feeling drowsy or sleepy during initial meditation sessions is quite common. This can significantly reduce the quality of our practice, and overcoming it requires considerable effort.Drowsiness can be attributed to one of two reasons:- Lack of sleep: If we're not getting enough rest, our brain may demand sleep during meditation to meet its required quota. This can be resolved by ensuring we get adequate sleep. As our meditation practice progresses, we may find that we need less sleep overall.- Past negative karma: Drowsiness during meditation could result from negative karma accumulated in past lives, acting as an obstacle to our practice. In such cases, the only solution is to practice deep repentance and seek forgiveness from the Buddha. To determine the root cause of our drowsiness, we must carefully observe our own sensations. Once we identify the cause, we can take appropriate action. If we suspect our drowsiness is due to negative karma, we should make a conscious effort to resist sleep during meditation and practice perpetual repentance and deferential bows to the Buddha.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 88: WHAT SHOULD WE DO IF WE FIND OURSELVES SLOUCHING WHILE MEDITATING?
Question 88: WHAT SHOULD WE DO IF WE FIND OURSELVES SLOUCHING WHILE MEDITATING?Answer: If we find ourselves slouching during meditation, it's a sign that our internal energy is weak. Forcing ourselves to straighten up won't solve the problem; we'll likely slouch again soon and find it difficult to sit for extended periods. When we notice we're slouching, we should shift our attention to the triangular tailbone at the base of our spine. This will naturally cause internal energy to rise, straightening our back without any conscious effort. Once our posture is stable, we can return to our usual meditation practice, focusing on the lower abdomen and maintaining slow, little and gentle breathing. The sacrum* is a remarkable part of the body. It subtly governs all other bones and serves as a source of internal energy when we focus our mind on it. Whenever we feel tired or weak, we can simply sit quietly, concentrate on the sacrum, and breathe smoothly. This practice will soon leave us feeling refreshed.(*) The sacrum is a wedge-shaped triangular bone located at the base of the vertebral column, above the caudal (tail) vertebrae or coccyx. It articulates with the pelvic girdle and is typically composed of five fused vertebrae in humans, which merge in early adulthood.Citation: https://www.britannica.com/science/sacrum#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 87: WHY DO SOME MEDITATION MASTERS EXPRESS CONTEMPT FOR THE BUDDHA, WHEN THEY...?
Question 87: WHY DO SOME MEDITATION MASTERS EXPRESS CONTEMPT FOR THE BUDDHA, WHEN THEY SHOULD RESPECT THE BUDDHA MORE THAN ORDINARY PEOPLE?Answer: This phenomenon is a side effect that can occur when individuals achieve certain results in meditation. Historically, the ancient Venerable Arahants held the Buddha in the highest regard and would not dare to move while in His presence. However, some meditation masters have been misunderstood. As their minds become purified, they may develop an inflated sense of self-importance, believing they have attained enlightenment equal to the Buddha's. This can lead them to express arrogance and disrespect. Such prideful words can diminish the merit of other beings and weaken the Dharma. This issue stems from a lack of proper guidance regarding the absolute respect that should be shown to the Buddha. When people make progress in meditation, they may unfortunately develop a rebellious attitude. True freedom is not about disrespecting the Buddha but about being liberated from afflictions when faced with adversity or temptation. In the Anguttara Nikaya, the Buddha taught that loyalty is a great virtue. As one properly progresses on the spiritual path, they should become more perfectly virtuous and loyal. Those who achieve results in meditation should feel eternal gratitude toward the Buddha. This attitude will prevent us from falling into wrong views. Individuals who attain the First Stage of Snlightenment (or First Level of Sainthood) which is known as Stream-entry (Sotapanna) develop the utmost respect for the Buddha and are assured of eventually attaining the Fourth Stage of Enlightenment aka Full Enlightenment (Arahant). In conclusion, regardless of one's progress, it is essential to maintain unwavering respect for the Buddha throughout countless lifetimes.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 86: WHEN THE MIND BECOMES CALM AND ENTERS A MEDITATIVE STATE, DOES IT MEAN THERE'S NOTHING LEFT...?
Question 86: WHEN THE MIND BECOMES CALM AND ENTERS A MEDITATIVE STATE, DOES IT MEAN THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO THINK ABOUT OR PERCEIVE?Answer: It's a common misconception that when the mind becomes mindful and calm during meditation, it becomes completely empty, devoid of thoughts or perceptions. In reality, the opposite is true. As one progresses in meditation, numerous new states of consciousness emerge, often inspiring practitioners to express their experiences through poetry and profound discussions. This initial eagerness to share one's experiences is typically a sign of immaturity. With time, practitioners tend to become more reserved and cautious about discussing their experiences.Meditation unveils a new realm of wisdom that can feel paradoxically empty yet full of wonder. This newfound insight often relates to philosophical, psychological, and principal concepts, which practitioners can articulate eloquently when prompted. If a practitioner develops psychic abilities, they may encounter even more extraordinary phenomena. However, without a strong emphasis on the concept of Non-self, practitioners may develop a meditation sickness characterized by an overwhelming urge to talk, which can potentially lead to mental health issues. Therefore, it's crucial for practitioners to cultivate the most thorough humility virtue to counterbalance any excessive excitement and maintain a composed demeanor as they progress on their spiritual journey.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 85: IS IT TRUE THAT PEOPLE WHO ACHIEVE A CALM MIND THROUGH MEDITATION WILL BECOME INDIFFERENT TO EVERYTHING IN LIFE?
Question 85: IS IT TRUE THAT PEOPLE WHO ACHIEVE A CALM MIND THROUGH MEDITATION WILL BECOME INDIFFERENT TO EVERYTHING IN LIFE?Answer: This is indeed a common side effect, so typical that practitioners often mistake it for the right path. When the mind becomes calm, individuals may lose interest in worldly affairs and view everything as illusory and detached. This state of indifference has both positive and negative aspects. On the positive side, it helps purify the practitioner's greed and attachment. However, it can also lead to an attitude of irresponsibility toward others. At this stage, it's crucial for practitioners to seek guidance from an experienced teacher with a correct comprehension. They should maintain the beneficial aspects of their practice such as letting go of attachment while developing compassion and a desire to help others. When actively contributing to society, even those with a strong meditative practice can be tempted by fame and recognition. Therefore, practitioners must remain vigilant. They should diligently serve others while maintaining a detached view of the world and avoiding any sense of pride or ownership in their good deeds. Many scriptures and commentaries emphasize the importance of, during contemplative stages, viewing everything as illusory and turning their back on everyone. This can lead people to become disillusioned with the world and ultimately contribute to the decline of Buddhism. Buddhists have to accumulate merit to strengthen the Dharma. Thus, Buddhists have to be even more dedicated to serving others than those who are not familiar with the teachings.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 84: WHAT IS A NEGATIVE TRAIT, AND CAN MEDITATION ELIMINATE IT?
Question 84: WHAT IS A NEGATIVE TRAIT, AND CAN MEDITATION ELIMINATE IT?Answer: A negative trait is an unwholesome inclination that resides within the mind, leading us to think, speak, and act negatively. There are three levels of negative traits: Habits (vāsanā), Hindrances (pañca nīvaraṇa), Fetters (saṃyojanāni).Habits are formed over many lifetimes through repeated actions and become almost immutable inclinations, such as swearing, indulging in delicious food, or being overly inquisitive about others' affairs, etc.Hindrances are negative traits created by wandering thoughts, similar to stains on a piece of cloth. The main hindrances are Greed, Anger, Doubt (uncertainty about one's practice), Drowsiness (sleepiness during meditation), and Restlessness (constant bodily fidget). These Hindrances disappear when one develops sustained mindfulness, just as stains on a cloth disappear when burned.Fetters are instincts deeply rooted in the Subconscious mind and are quite difficult to eradicate. Even meditative accomplishments can't completely eliminate them, but Sainthoods. There are numerous Fetters; generally speaking, there are ten main ones that practitioners must overcome on the path to absolute enlightenment, including Belief in a self (selfishness), Uncertainty (morality confusion), Attachment to rites and rituals (stubbornness on the trivial issues), Avarice, Outrage, Obsession with FormRealms, Obsession with Formless Realms, Sloth (laziness in creating merit), Conceit (looking down upon others), Ignorance (the last delusion).Practitioners must repent and seek protection from the Buddha to eliminate negative traits, as it is laborious to do so on one's own.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 83: WHY DO SOME PEOPLE WHO HAVE ACHIEVED CERTAIN RESULTS IN MEDITATION EVENTUALLY DEVELOP...?
Question 83: WHY DO SOME PEOPLE WHO HAVE ACHIEVED CERTAIN RESULTS IN MEDITATION EVENTUALLY DEVELOP AGE-RELATED ILLNESSES AND SUFFER GREATLY?Answer: When individuals achieve results in meditation, their minds become calm, clear, empty, peaceful, ecstatic, insightful, etc. At this point, they may feel no need to exert much effort and can simply dwell in this state, enjoying a carefree existence. Sometimes, they may even experience bursts of inspiration or a sense of tranquility. However, they often make three fundamental mistakes:- firstly, forgetting the ‘deeply-ingrained ignorance and mistakes’, they may forget that they have not yet attained full enlightenment and that even a clean house is still made of perishable materials, a calm mind is still that of an ordinary person.- secondly, neglecting virtuous actions, they may become less focused on helping others.- thirdly, disregarding the lower abdomen, by focusing their attention on the upper part of the body, they gradually lose their True Yin, leading to the weakening of their internal organs.Accomplished meditation masters have warned their disciples that the most dangerous period is when one begins to see results from their meditation practice. This is when various misconceptions may arise, accompanied by complacency, arrogance, negligence. When experiencing any success in meditation, practitioners have to bitterly repent to overcome these negative states of mind, such as arrogance, laziness, smugness, self-flattering, thought of being free from the Law of Karma, etc. They should also avoid focusing exclusively on the upper part of the body and instead cultivate the True Yin by focusing on the lower abdomen.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 82: EVERYONE NEEDS TO WORK TO MAKE A LIVING. WORK CAN OFTEN BE STRESSFUL AND EXHAUSTING. HOW CAN WE MEDITATE WHILE WORKING, AS THE THEORY SUGGESTS?Answer: Only those who have reached an advanced level of meditation can maintain a calm mind while working. For most people, work is a major source of distraction. Some jobs are less onerous, allowing practitioners to maintain a degree of mindfulness of their body while working. This can help prevent the mind from wandering. Some practitioners find that using qigong breathing techniques while working with hands can reduce fatigue and keep their minds focused. However, for physically demanding or mentally taxing jobs, maintaining mindfulness can be tough. At the beginning, one might be able to focus on bodily sensations, but as fatigue sets in, the mind becomes absorbed in the task at hand.Jobs that require intense concentration, such as driving, accounting, or making critical decisions, demand our full attention. In these situations, we must prioritize our work responsibilities and may not even be able to meditate. However, if these tasks are morally beneficial, completing them with a sense of duty can lead to a state of calm and mindfulness afterward, almost as a reward.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 81: WHAT IS WALKING MEDITATION, OR MOVING MEDITATION, I.E. MEDITATION IN WALKING?Answer: After the sedentary meditation, practitioners should walk back and forth to stretch the legs. While walking, maintain mindfulness in the following way:- walk slowly and gently within a suitable space; there’s no need to cover a long distance, even pacing within a room is sufficient- relax our entire body, ensuring there's no tension- attend to the sensation of our feet touching the ground, there's no need to concentrate on our breath- remind ourselves of our impermanent nature and the underlying ignorance and mistakes- use this breathing technique if we wish to do qigong simultaneously: inhale quickly through our nose and exhale slowly through our mouth.Remember to stay safe when practicing walking meditation outside. Secluded areas can be risky, we could become easy targets, hence be aware of our surroundings. Question 80: WHY DO SOME PEOPLE EXPERIENCE VARIOUS VISIONS AFTER REACHING A CERTAIN LEVEL OF MINDFULNESS?Answer: When the mind becomes mindful, any visions that appear are actually illusions. These illusions can be categorized as follows:- illusions stemming from residual thoughts: These are often images or thoughts that have appeared before.- illusions arising from past karma: These can manifest as strange, sometimes frightening images.- illusions generated by negative forces: These can cause practitioners to become arrogant or agitated.- illusions produced by internal energy: These may appear as lights, colors, or other visual phenomena. To dispel these illusions, practitioners should maintain their focus on the lower abdomen. It's crucial not to indulge curiosity or pursue any delusions, as doing so can lead to insanity. Instead, one should consistently remind oneself of the impure nature of both body and mind.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 79: GIVEN THE HIGH PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T SEE RESULTS FROM MEDITATION PRACTICE...?
Question 79: GIVEN THE HIGH PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T SEE RESULTS FROM MEDITATION PRACTICE, DOESN'T THIS MEAN THAT MOST PEOPLE HAVE THE INFERIOR FOUNDATION?Answer: The percentage of people with the inferior foundation is not necessarily high. However, the percentage of people practicing meditation incorrectly is remarkably high. Incorrect practice leads to a lack of results, regardless of how long one meditates. This is why we emphasize the importance of finding a qualified teacher when beginning one's meditation practice. It's also worth noting that even experienced meditators who have achieved their own results may not be effective teachers. They may simply teach based on their own experiences, spiritual foundation, and methods, without considering the unique needs of their students. Many people follow these teachers because they have seen the teacher's results, but they don't realize that personal achievements and effective teaching are two entirely dissimilar stories. While we should continue to respect those who have achieved results in their meditation practice, we must be cautious when choosing a meditation path. Meditation is a complex system that involves Psychology, Moralogy, Physiology, Karmalogy, Enlightenmentlogy, Medicalogy, and even divine intervention. It's not something that can be explained in a few simple words.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 78: WHAT IS THE SIXTH STEP OF THE SIX MINDFULNESS STAGES?
Question 78: WHAT IS THE SIXTH STEP OF THE SIX MINDFULNESS STAGES?Answer: After practicing the first five steps of the Six Mindfulness Stages, the mind often becomes more focused and calm. At this point, practitioners may become overconfident and develop a sense of pride. This is why the sixth step is needed.Even when experiencing tranquility, practitioners should remind themselves of the “deeply-ingrained ignorance and shortcomings”. This self-awareness helps prevent arrogance from arising and disrupting the long-made progress. The specific self-reminder (also known as contemplative attention) can vary depending on an individual's spiritual foundation. For instance, when experiencing calm, one might think, "This tranquility is simply of the ordinary foundation, nothing extraordinary," or "This level of mindfulness is still of the inferior foundation." By accurately acknowledging one's foundation, practitioners can avoid losing their merit. As for those who consider themselves to be of the Noble foundation, we could not help nor guide them anymore. It's important to distinguish between the tranquility of an Noble One, which is rooted in profound virtue, and that of an ordinary person, which is less stable and less assured. The tranquility experienced by an ordinary person is often fragile due to unresolved negative karma and a lack of deep-rooted virtue. It's challenging to accurately assess one's spiritual level without making mistakes. Those with the inferior foundation face a difficult situation: their practice may not yield significant results, but giving up can lead to negative consequences. Therefore, they must persevere in the hope of accumulating sufficient merit to improve their condition.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 77: THE MEDITATION TECHNIQUE SEEMS QUITE COMPREHENSIVE ALREADY...?
Question 77: THE MEDITATION TECHNIQUE SEEMS QUITE COMPREHENSIVE ALREADY. WHY ARE THERE TWO MORE STEPS OF THE SIX MINDFULNESS STAGES?Answer: The Buddha taught us to be mindful of our entire body, leaving no part unattended. The fifth step of the Six Mindfulness Stages involves directing our attention to our lower abdomen, specifically to the Dan Tian and Hui Yin acupuncture points. We can google to find these two exact locations. Why focus so deeply in the lower abdomen? These two points have an abject impact on the brain. The Dan Tian point enhances mindfulness but may occasionally induce hallucinations. The Hui Yin point promotes calmness and can help treat various brain disorders. Everyone, regardless of outward appearance, has some imbalances in their brain. By meditating with our focus on the Hui Yin point, these imbalances can gradually be addressed.Residing in the Hui Yin point also helps build internal energy, improving overall health and endurance, and allowing for longer meditation sessions. It also strengthens the body's root energy. From a philosophical perspective, focusing on this point cultivates Humility.During this step, the practitioner maintains a Slow–Little–Gentle breath while keeping their focus on the lower abdomen. However, it's important to periodically review the previous steps of the Six Mindfulness Stages.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind.

Question 76: WHAT IS THE FOURTH STEP OF THE SIX MINDFULNESS STAGES?
Question 76: WHAT IS THE FOURTH STEP OF THE SIX MINDFULNESS STAGES?Answer: The fourth step of mindfulness focuses on working with the breath. Nearly all forms of meditation, qigong, internal martial arts, and yoga incorporate breathing techniques. Breathing is indeed a remarkable phenomenon. From a medical perspective, we inhale to bring oxygen into our lungs and exhale to expel carbon dioxide. The lungs transfer oxygen to the blood, which then carries it throughout the body. Similarly, the lungs remove carbon dioxide from the blood and expel it through exhalation. If we stop breathing for even a few minutes, we risk death due to lack of oxygen to the brain. During physical exertion, our metabolic rate increases, demanding more oxygen, which causes us to breathe faster.Eastern martial arts traditions hold that proper breathing can generate an internal energy distinct from muscular one. This internal energy is believed to be more powerful and enduring than muscular one. While muscular strength tends to decline with age, internal energy can be maintained for longer. The key to cultivating this internal energy lies in the exhalation process, which we'll explore in more detail later.Psychophysiology shows that our breathing speeds up when we're doing mentally demanding tasks. This principle forms the key of Meditation regarding the breathing practice. Breath is viewed as the bridge between mind and body. In numerous scriptures, the Buddha emphasized the importance of breath in Meditation. In this fourth step of the Six Mindfulness Stages, we practice breathing according to these guidelines:- Maintain awareness of the breath. This keeps us mindful and prevents our attention from wandering.- Allow the breath to naturally become stronger, but avoid intentionally intensifying it. Doing so can stimulate mental activity and wandering thoughts due to the mind-body connection.- Be aware of the breath without deliberately controlling it. Consciously manipulating the breath can also stimulate mental activity.- Maintain a SLOW–LITTLE–GENTLE breath. Avoid rapid, deep, and forceful breathing. As the mind calms, the breath will naturally slow down. However, it's crucial to maintain awareness of the breath without losing focus.Avoid directing the breath up or down. Simply observe the natural inhalation and exhalation while keeping our attention on the abdomen. Many practitioners find their minds become calm at this stage, though others may still experience distractions.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 75: IF THE SECOND STEP OF FOCUSING ON THE CHEST AND ABDOMEN ISN'T SUFFICIENT TO MAINTAIN...?
Question 75: IF THE SECOND STEP OF FOCUSING ON THE CHEST AND ABDOMEN ISN'T SUFFICIENT TO MAINTAIN PROLONGED MINDFULNESS, WHAT IS THE THIRD STEP OF THE SIX MINDFULNESS STAGES?Answer: While concentrating on the chest and abdomen can extend mindfulness and soothe the mind, it may also subtly increase the Attachment to the body. Thus, the third step of the Six Mindfulness Stages involves returning to contemplate the body's impermanence. We should acknowledge the body's complexity: its intricate cellular network, delicate balance, and susceptibility to disease and injury. The body is simultaneously clean and unclean. While blood must remain sterile, the body also expels waste.Even celestial beings' bodies are better than human ones. If ours are left unwashed, they become foul, and the same is true for our pets, even if they are bathed daily. The upper body parts, which we often adorn, are generally considered cleaner, while the lower parts, closer to excretory organs, are viewed as more impure. The body's nervous system seeks pleasure, potentially leading to overindulgence and diminishing merit. Practitioners must learn to moderate sensual pleasures to preserve merit for spiritual practice and enlightenment. The body is subject to the law of impermanence: birth, growth, aging, illness, and death. Death can occur prematurely due to disease or accidents.Within the body lies a powerful survival instinct. This instinct drives us to preserve our lives and reproduce. However, it also causes suffering, leading to fear, control, and humiliation.By understanding and contemplating the body in this way, we can deepen our mindfulness. This understanding can also foster a more balanced and mindful life every day. We are less infatuated with others, more sober-minded. When faced with life-threatening situations, we are less likely to do wrong things or react out of fear.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 74: IF CONTEMPLATING THE FACT THAT 'MY MIND IS WANDERING' ISN'T ENOUGH TO SUSTAIN MINDFULNESS...?
Question 74: IF CONTEMPLATING THE FACT THAT 'MY MIND IS WANDERING' ISN'T ENOUGH TO SUSTAIN MINDFULNESS, WHAT'S THE SECOND STEP OF THE SIX MINDFULNESS STAGES?Answer: The second step of the Six Mindfulness Stages isn't about contemplating a philosophical concept (or truth) but rather a practical technique. Many people assume that Wandering thoughts originate from the brain and thus focus their attention on the head to stop them. However, the root cause of wandering thoughts often lies in the body. This second step involves paying attention to the chest and abdomen. Be aware of and sense the sensations in our chest and abdomen. The nervous system is extensive, and by directing our attention to the lower part of our body, we activate a larger part of this system, creating a stronger sense of mindfulness. This, in particular, effectively calms wandering thoughts. The Buddha's teaching of 'sense the whole body breathing in, sense the whole body breathing out' is a unique method that leverages this physiological mechanism.Individuals with deep-rooted spiritual potentials may find that simply being aware of their entire body is enough to sustain mindfulness and enter a meditative state. However, for those with weaker foundations, while being aware of the chest and abdomen can increase mindfulness, it may not be sufficient to completely eliminate wandering thoughts. Question 73: THUS, WHEN STARTING MEDITATION, WHICH SPECIFIC SUBJECTS SHOULD WE FOCUS ON?
Question 73: THUS, WHEN STARTING MEDITATION, WHICH SPECIFIC SUBJECTS SHOULD WE FOCUS ON?Answer: Initially, it's advisable to practice fundamental contemplations such as the impermanence of the body and the world to eradicate deep-rooted misconceptions. When we truly enter meditation, we should focus on the fact that our mind is currently wandering. This is the bare truth. After assuming the full lotus position and cultivating the fundamental virtues, the practitioners should contemplate the fact that their mind is wandering. That's all. There's no need to fight against, suppress, or eliminate these wandering thoughts. This is the first step of the Six Mindfulness Stages in Meditation.Recognizing that our mind is wandering is the beginning of awakening. We're no longer being dragged around by our thoughts. However, this initial mindfulness isn't strong enough to last indefinitely. Soon, wandering thoughts will again cloud our mind, and we'll find ourselves lost in them again and again. Some individuals with exceptionally high spiritual potential (comparable to those with the Noble foundation) may find that simply acknowledging the wandering mind is sufficient to maintain prolonged mindfulness. However, most practitioners don't possess such extraordinary abilities. For them, merely contemplating that the mind is wandering isn't enough to sustain continuous mindfulness.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 72: WHAT THOUGHTS OR MEDITATION OBJECTS CAN HELP GRADUALLY STOP WANDERING THOUGHTS?
Question 72: WHAT THOUGHTS OR MEDITATION OBJECTS CAN HELP GRADUALLY STOP WANDERING THOUGHTS?Answer: As we've discussed before, when we plant a new plant in a garden full of weeds, the weeds don't disappear immediately. They gradually diminish as the new plant grows and casts its shade. Using suitable thoughts for meditation can bring about mindfulness alike, but it won't eliminate wandering thoughts right away. It takes sustained mindfulness to gradually calm the mind. For a thought to induce mindfulness, it should have the following characteristics:- It should state a fact about oneself or the external world.- This fact should inspire humility, generosity, and morality.- This fact should help one let go of attachments and delusions. For example, the Buddha taught us to contemplate the impermanence of the body of the four elements – that it will age, become ill, and eventually die, decaying into dust. This thought highlights the inevitable nature of death, promoting humility, reducing greed, and fostering detachment.Another example is the Buddha's teaching on the impermanence of all phenomena. He taught us that everything in the world is conditioned, impermanent, and without a permanent, unchanging essence. This understanding helps us to let go of attachments to worldly things and cultivate an inner peace. The Buddha also taught us to contemplate the suffering inherent in existence. Life is full of pain, and pleasures are temporary. This realization can motivate us to wholeheartedly seek liberation from suffering. We can also meditate on the non-existence of a fixed self. The sense of a separate self is merely an illusion created by the mind in turmoil.Practicing non-self and letting go of ego-centeredness can also enhance mindfulness.Contemplating the body and mind as a collection of impurities can foster humility and repentance. All of these contemplations cultivate mindfulness, and sustained mindfulness leads to concentration. However, arrogance can be a stumbling block on the path to mindfulness, even during moments of insight.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 71: WHAT ABOUT THE IDEA THAT EACH OF US HAS AN INHERENT BUDDHA-NATURE OR TRUE NATURE...?
Question 71: WHAT ABOUT THE IDEA THAT EACH OF US HAS AN INHERENT BUDDHA-NATURE OR TRUE NATURE, AND THAT BY SIMPLY REDISCOVERING THIS TRUE NATURE, WE CAN BECOME ENLIGHTENED?Answer: Let's revisit the three invisible foundations of beings:- The Noble foundation: Individuals born with this foundation possess exceptional qualities. With brief practice, they can easily attain Meditative Accomplishments, Sainthoods. These individuals often feel their minds are inherently pure, as if they've always been this way. They simply need to rediscover this purity. Such people spend their lives proclaiming the existence of an inherent, pure Buddha-nature, encouraging others to seek Enlightenment. Their claims, based on personal experiences, sound convincing and instill great confidence. However, whether others believe them is a personal choice.- The Ordinary foundation: People born with this foundation are average. However, due to some positive karma, they may develop an interest in meditation and experience moments of mental tranquility. But their minds are still subject to fluctuations, like a house that can be both clean and dirty. While the house remains, it's still a modest dwelling, not a mansion (not of the Noble foundation). Similarly, whether their minds are calm or agitated, they remain ordinary beings, not saints. If an ordinary person believes they possess a sublime and pure Buddha-nature, it can hinder their spiritual progress. They may waste thousands of years in practice without results of existence due to excessive pride, or even fall into the inferior foundation.- The Inferior foundation: These individuals were destined for lower realms, but due to some merit, they have retained a human body and have the opportunity to practice the Dharma. It's vital to comprehend that these individuals can't easily enter deep states of meditation. They struggle with maintaining mindfulness and are often distracted by wandering thoughts. With diligent practice, they can avoid falling into lower realms, but they can't expect to quickly ascend to a higher foundation. If such a person believes they possess a sublime and pure Buddha-nature, they risk mental illness, personality disorders, and causing fear among those around them. Therefore, the premise, the belief, the thought in an inherent, pure Buddha-nature is plainly true of Those with the Noble foundation. If we assess ourselves as having the ordinary or inferior foundation, we must immediately shun such thought.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 70: THE MIND IS CONSTANTLY THINKING. HOW CAN WE STOP THINKING WITHOUT HARMING OUR BRAIN?
Question 70: THE MIND IS CONSTANTLY THINKING. HOW CAN WE STOP THINKING WITHOUT HARMING OURBRAIN?Answer: The brain is always active, processing necessary thoughts. When there'snothing specific to focus on, the mind wanders, and we call these randomthoughts WANDERING THOUGHTS. To stop thinking, we must actively choose'suitable thoughts' for the mind to concentrate on. By dwelling on these Suitable Thoughts, the mind will gradually cease its wandering. This is the GOLDEN FORMULAfor stilling the mind.Imagine a plot of land overgrown with weeds. To clear the land, we plant suitableplants that grow strong and tall, shading the entire area. The weeds, unable to thrive in the shade, will wither and stop growing.Originally, these suitable thoughts will create mindfulness but not immediately stopwandering thoughts. As mindfulness deepens, it's like a shadow covering theentire area, and the wandering thoughtsgradually cease, just as the weeds no longer grow. This is calledentering a meditative state.Different Meditation traditions offervarious Subjects for contemplation, reflection, and inquiry to stimulate mindfulness. Unlike schools, unlikeSubjects. While all approacheshave their merits, it is safer and moreauthentic to focus on thesubjects taught by the Buddha.Remember, there are three stages to pass through: Virtuous Mind,Mindful Mind, Tranquil Mind. Those who rush into seeking a meditative state without cultivatingthese stages are mistaken. The VirtuousMind is rooted in abyssalmorality. The MindfulMind is a state ofpresent-moment awareness. The Tranquil Mind is of the meditative state. Eachstage requires a long period ofpractice. Only after passing throughthe Tranquil Mind stage can one enterthe Enlightened Mind one.

Question 69: WHAT INTENTION SHOULD ONE HAVE WHEN BEGINNING MEDITATION?
Question 69: WHAT INTENTION SHOULD ONE HAVE WHEN BEGINNING MEDITATION?Answer: When starting meditation, one should begin by folding their hands andreciting a mantra, such as a Buddha'sname, to confesspast wrongdoings, seek meritfor spiritual growth, and pray for the enlightenment of all sentientbeings. After lowering the hands, the practitionershould cultivate the following three fundamental virtues:- Absolute obeisance to the Buddha- Infinite compassion for all beings- Utmost humilityThesethree fundamental virtues serve as the foundation for developing countless others.Eachquality can be explored more deeply depending on the practitioner's specificneeds. For example: When cultivating complete reverence for the Buddha, one cancontemplate the Buddha's infinite wisdom and compassion for seconds. Whencultivating boundless compassion for all beings, one can reflect on thesuffering of animals, humans, and even inanimate objects. When cultivatinginfinite humility, one can view oneself as insignificant as a speck of dust ora blade of grass, and aspiring to respect all beings. Question 68: WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO SIT IN THE FULL LOTUS POSITION?
Question 68: WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO SIT IN THE FULL LOTUS POSITION?Answer: Sitting in the full lotus position often leads to quick numbness in thelegs, followed by intense pain. This pain can make concentration duringmeditation challenging. One might assume that a different, more comfortableposition would be better for meditation. However, this is a misconceptionstemming from lack of experience on the meditative path. The Buddhas of the ten directions and three times all meditated in the full lotus position due to its unique benefits. When the mind is calm, the full lotus position provides themost stable posture for both body and mind. As meditation deepens, the paindiminishes and becomes less significant.Usea meditation cushion or thin pad wide enough to support our legs without themhanging over the edge.Cross our left leg over our right thigh, then our right leg over ourleft thigh. Some find it easier to cross the right leg first, then the left.Place our hands, palms up, one on top of the other and altogether onour soles. This aligns the palms of the hands and soles of our feet, directing our focus toward the True Yin.Keepour back straight, but avoid over-arching, as this can cause tension and headaches.Keep our elbows slightly away from our sides.Initially, look at a point in front of us, but don't focus on anything external as ourattention should be inward. Keep our eyes open at first to maintain alertness, but once we developinner awareness, we can close them.Rest our tongue on the roof of our mouth. Keep our shoulders level butrelaxed. Our entire body should be relaxed and soft, yet still and motionless. While in the full lotus, scan our body to check for any tension or misalignment.Ifour muscles are too tight for the full lotus, practice the half lotus position.Gently press down on our knees with our hands to help lower them. After a fewdays of practice, we should be able to sit in the full lotus.Ifour back slumps, it indicates low internal energy. Attend to our sacrum and breathe evenly and gently. Our innerenergy will strengthen and support our back.We may initially experience facial itching.Don't scratch; it will subsideon its own.Legnumbness is common at first. Don't change our position; endure the numbnessuntil it passes. Pain will follow, varying in intensity from person to person.Pain is a measure of our meditation effort and can help reduce past negativekarma.Evenwhen just starting with the full lotus position, try to sit for at least 30minutes. Question 67: SHOULD WE ENCOURAGE GROUP MEDITATION PRACTICES? WOULDN'T THIS MOTIVATE EVERYONE TO PRACTICE MORE DILIGENTLY?
Question 67: SHOULD WE ENCOURAGE GROUP MEDITATION PRACTICES? WOULDN'T THIS MOTIVATE EVERYONE TO PRACTICE MORE DILIGENTLY?Answer: Meditation is often viewedas an advanced spiritual practice. When someone discloses thatthey meditate, it can be perceived as boasting about their spiritualachievements. This may lead to a loss of merit and createobstacles on one's spiritualjourney. Meditation requireshumility and discretion; the fewer peoplewho know about our practice, the better. However, the principle of altruism suggests that we should sharebeneficial practices with others, and Meditation is no exception. We shouldn'tkeep it to ourselves. This creates a dilemma. On one hand, keeping meditation privatemight seem selfish. On the other hand, openlypromoting it could be seen as bragging. Therefore,a lay practitioner must strive to balance these two conflicting tendencies:maintaining discretion whilealso encouraging othersto practice. How can we achieveboth? One approach is to present the benefits of Meditation in a way thatappears to praise the Buddha, the Arahants, or other enlightened beings, ratherthan ourselves. Question 66: WHAT IS A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF YIN AND YANG, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON THE CONCEPT OF "TRUE YIN"?
Question 66: WHAT IS A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF YIN AND YANG, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON THE CONCEPT OF "TRUE YIN"?Answer: The philosophy of YIN YANG suggests that everything in the universeconsists of two opposing but complementary forces:Yin and Yang.Yin represents the obscure, while Yang does the obvious. For instance, the visible part of a house is Yang, while the foundation buried underground is Yin. The architecture of a house isYang, while the interior design is Yin.Thevisible part of a tree rising from the ground is Yang, while the roots runningunderground are Yin.The outer appearance of a person is Yang, the inner mind is Yin. The front of a person isYang, the back of a person is Yin.From the navel up is Yang, from thenavel down is Yin. Facial expressions are Yang, voice is Yin. Talent is Yang, morality is Yin. Physicalstrength is Yang, inner potential is Yin. Speech is Yang, thought isYin, etc.Upon examining these examples, it becomes clear that Yin is often themore fundamental and crucialaspect. A wise person pays more attentionto Yin, as a strong foundation (Yin) is necessary forthe growth and development of the visible aspects (Yang).True Yin is an invisible energy source located deep in the abdomen. Itis responsible for maintaining the stability and health of the entire body, includingthe internal organs and the brain. The more abundantTrue Yin is, the healthiera person will be. Thereare several ways to cultivate True Yin:- Practicing humility:Consistently viewing oneselfas humble and respectingothers.- Limiting sexual desire:Sexual pleasure can drain True Yin.- Practicing meditation with a focus on the lower abdomen.- Strengthening the legs.- Consuming foods with favorable medicinalproperties, such as root vegetables.Meditationpractitioners should strive for a thorough understanding of True Yin tocultivate it effectively and promote optimal health.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 65: THE BRAIN'S NATURAL TENDENCY IS TO THINK CONSTANTLY. IT'S EXTREMELY CHALLENGING TO COMPLETELY STOP THE MIND...?
Question 65: THE BRAIN'S NATURAL TENDENCY IS TO THINK CONSTANTLY. IT'S EXTREMELY CHALLENGING TO COMPLETELY STOP THE MIND FROM THINKING THROUGH MEDITATION. IF PRACTICED INCORRECTLY, COULD THIS SEVERELY DAMAGE THE BRAIN WITH DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES?Answer: It's true that the brain's default state is one of constant thought. If forced or improperly suppressed, the brain can indeed be harmed, potentially leading to conditions like mental instability or psychosis.A key principle to remember is that we shouldn't directly confront or try to eliminate our thoughts. Instead, we should use skillful and appropriate methods to indirectly allow WANDERING THOUGHTS TO SUBSIDE. For example, focusing on the breath is an indirect method that can naturally lead to a reduction in thoughts. The entire Buddhist tradition doesn't teach direct confrontation with wandering thoughts. It emphasizes various methods of true contemplation and moral insight that ultimately result in the natural cessation of thinking. While it's possible to directly face and quieten thoughts when one has a high level of awareness and inner strength, prolonged use of this method can harm both the body and mind. Excessive focus on the head can weaken the kidneys, deplete true yin, and damage the brain. Practitioners should avoid concentrating too much on the head area, regardless of the reason, whether it's for opening chakras, activating the crown chakra, or directly observing thoughts.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 64: WHY DOES ONE GAIN A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THINGS WHEN THE MIND ENTERS A MEDITATIVE STATE AND CEASES TO THINK?
Question 64: WHY DOES ONE GAIN A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THINGS WHEN THE MIND ENTERS A MEDITATIVE STATEAND CEASES TO THINK?Answer: There are two types of wisdom. Wisdom acquired through thinking, gainedthrough observation, reasoning, experimentation, and learning, leads to thedevelopment of science and technology. Wisdom acquired through meditationarises from a calm and focused mind, allowing us to see beyond the surface ofthings and understand the universal nature. The path to comprehending the world through learning orients us as faras we can, with a specific and practical approach, and scientists have opted toseek knowledge this way. This path has been accumulated over thousands ofyears, through many generations, and has led the world to its presentcivilization.Thepath to cultivate wisdom through meditation bearing a distinguished perspectiveon life allows us to bypass the limitations of our sensesand intellect and connect with a deeper level of understanding. Meditation demands morality, principles, purity, inner peace, and the release of worldly attachments. Those who walk this path may not beinterested in building a powerfuland technologically advancedcivilization, as they maysee the potential for such civilizations to become corruptand destructive. Instead, they may focus on helping others achieve supreme spiritual awakening, inner peace and noble sustainability. Our mind could be on track to obtain wisdom if it is tranquil. Question 63: WHY MIGHT A SUCCESSFUL MEDITATOR (SUCH AS A MEDITATION MASTER) STILL GIVE INCORRECT MEDITATION INSTRUCTIONS?
Question 63: WHY MIGHT A SUCCESSFUL MEDITATOR (SUCH AS A MEDITATION MASTER) STILL GIVE INCORRECT MEDITATION INSTRUCTIONS?Answer: People often teach based on their personal experiences, which can lead to misleading advice. For example, someone who's made a fortune in the stock market, real estate, new coffee shops, high-yield durian trees, karaoke restaurants, etc, might encourage others to invest heavily, without considering the unique circumstances that led to their success. Correspondingly, a successful meditator may recommend techniques that worked for them, but these methods might not be suitable for everyone because of merit fluctuation. When a meditator successfully enters a meditative state, it's often due to a combination of their accumulated merit and the specific meditation technique they're using. Everyone's karmic circumstances are unalike, and what works for one person may not work for another. Every method has its strengths and weaknesses. A person with abundant merit can often avoid a method's drawbacks, while someone with less merit might experience negative effects. For instance, a person with good karma might find that focusing on the breath quickly leads to a calm mind. However, someone else trying the same technique might develop insomnia. The first person, unaware of this potential side effect, might struggle to explain why the second person is having difficulties.Furthermore, many meditation teachers focus on describing their own enlightened experiences rather than providing clear instructions. This can be misleading, as it encourages others to try to replicate their experiences without understanding the underlying principles, and end up depleting their merit. The Buddha, in contrast, taught a universal method that could be adapted to suit different individuals' needs. He didn't teach based solely on His own unique experiences. This is the Buddha’s Great Wisdom. While it's important to respect successful meditators, we should be cautious about blindly following their instructions. It's better to seek out a comprehensive and systematic approach to Meditation that covers all aspects of the practice. This will enable us to make informed decisions about our own practice and, if necessary, to guide others effectively.#Buddha, #Buddhism, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightenment, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #Blessing, #Goodblessing, #Janna, #JannaMonastery, #JannaOrderMonastery, #LawOfKarma, #CauseAndEffect, #UniversalTruth, #KarmicRetribution, #AxiomaticTruth, #PhilosophyOfMind,

Question 62: DOES ENTERING A MEDITATIVE STATE MEAN I HAVE BECOME A ZEN MASTER?
Question 62: DOES ENTERING A MEDITATIVE STATE MEAN I HAVE BECOME A ZEN MASTER? Answer: There are three foundations that we should understand to avoid self-deception (flattering ourselves): - The Noble Foundation: Individuals born with this quality possess the attributes of a saint, even before practicing meditation. When they meditate, they naturally attain enlightenment. Even if their minds momentarily wander, their fundamental nature remains that of a saint. It's like a mansion; even if it gets a little dirty, it's still a mansion. - The Ordinary Foundation: People born with this quality possess the characteristics of ordinary beings, and tenuous connection to Buddhism. Through diligent meditation, they may achieve certain meditative states, but they remain ordinary. It's like a thatched hut; no matter how clean it is, it can't become a mansion. To transform into a mansion requires accumulating countless good deeds and cultivating profound virtue. Many meditators fall into this category, achieving meditative states but remaining ordinary beings. - The Inferior Foundation: These individuals were destined for lower realms such as those of animals, hungry ghosts, or hell but were able to maintain a human form due to past good deeds. However, their spiritual potential is quite limited. Even upon encountering the Dharma, they have developed a sincere intention to practice meditation, they may struggle to enter deep meditative states and may only be able to maintain a state of mindfulness. This is like living in a dilapidated hut where rain and wind can easily penetrate, despite any efforts to repair it. If such individuals persevere in meditation and diligently practice repentance, they may improve their spiritual condition in future lives hopefully. We must assess our own foundation to understand our potential and limitations.

Question 61: WHAT PREPARATIONS SHOULD A LAY PRACTITIONER MAKE BEFORE PRACTICING MEDITATION?
Answer: Meditation is a profound practice that requires careful and thorough preparation for a lifelong journey. It's the final step of the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Buddha Himself attained Enlightenment through Meditation. Everyone should practice meditation, and in the future, it may well become an essential life skill. However, Meditation is quite complex. While it may seem simple to just focus the mind and stop thinking, it's actually a fierce battle against the mind's natural tendency to wander. The success rate of those who embark on this journey is quite low. Many fail because they underestimate Meditation's complexity, lack a solid foundation, and begin without a clear direction. To start meditating, four essential preparations are needed in order as below:- A Solid Theoretical Foundation: It's crucial to thoroughly study Meditation theory and find the most accurate teachings. Many different meditation methods are taught, and even those who claim to have achieved meditative states may not teach correctly. Understanding meditation's complexities is essential.- Merit Accumulation: Next, one must accumulate extraordinary merit to practice Meditation effectively. This involves performing numerous acts of kindness and discreetly sharing the Buddha’s teachings with others. Accumulating merit elevates one to a higher spiritual realm, making it easier to enter meditative states.- Moral Cultivation: Afterwards, a high level of moral purity is necessary for Meditation. A calm mind without moral grounding is not sustainable.- Physical Conditioning: Then, practicing Qigong or other physical exercises to improve health is essential. The initial stages of Meditation, especially when sitting in the full lotus position, can be physically demanding. A strong body can better endure the discomfort.

Question 60: HOW SHOULD LAY PRACTITIONERS DEAL WITH DECEITFUL, MANIPULATIVE, AND UNSCRUPULOUS PEOPLE THEY ENCOUNTER IN LIFE?
Answer: To achieve their goals, people often use various methods, including:- Legal means: Negotiation, cooperation in accordance with the prevailing national laws.- Moral means: Words of morality and acts of kindness, good karma comes in return.- Immoral means: Manipulation, deceit, and harming others for personal gain. The greater the potential for fame or fortune, the more likely people are to resort to immoral tactics rather than following laws and moral principles. Few can resist the temptation of great wealth or power while maintaining their integrity. Thus, the pursuit of fame and fortune can reveal one's true character. Those who can resist these temptations are truly admirable. Some organizations even specialize in teaching manipulative tactics, and some individuals become highly skilled in these arts. It can be challenging to avoid their traps.Lay practitioners should develop a basic understanding of these worldly tactics for self-protection. However, we should strictly adhere to current laws and moral principles in our interactions and avoid using manipulative or deceitful methods. By upholding our integrity, we ensure a positive rebirth in future lives. Those who resort to immoral means may enjoy temporary success, but their bad karma will eventually lead to negative consequences.

Question 59: HOW CAN WE CULTIVATE POSITIVE QUALITIES IN MIND?
Answer: Cultivating positive qualities, like eliminating negative traits, requires seeking the Buddha's grace. We can't simply create these qualities on our own. Moreover, we should genuinely admire those who possess the qualities we wish to develop. For instance, if we want to cultivate Selflessness, Humility, Patience, Generosity, Mindfulness, or Diligence, we should pray to the Buddha to instill these qualities in our mind. We should also praise those who exemplify these virtues. By consistently affirming our desire for these qualities and observing those who embody them, we can gradually develop these positive traits in our own lives and interactions.Besides, we should encourage others to cultivate these virtues as well.

Question 58: HOW CAN WE OVERCOME A STUBBORN BAD HABIT OR NEGATIVE TRAIT?
Answer: We might struggle with impulsiveness, arrogance, laziness, excessive talking, avoiding responsibilities, selfishness, or gossiping. The list of human vices is extensive, and these traits collectively create our complex and often challenging world. When we recognize a negative trait in ourselves, we must understand that it's deeply ingrained and difficult to eradicate alone. Therefore, we should sincerely pray to the Buddha, acknowledging our faults and seeking merit to help overcome these negative tendencies. Consistent practice and sincere repentance over time will gradually help eliminate these harmful habits. To help others overcome their negative traits, we can encourage them to follow a similar approach: pray to the Buddha, acknowledge their faults, and seek the Buddha's guidance in overcoming them.

Question 57: FILIAL PIETY IS A CHERISHED ASPECT OF EASTERN CULTURE, AND ARGUABLY OF CULTURES WORLDWIDE. HOW SHOULD LAY PRACTITIONERS UNDERSTAND FILIAL PIETY?
Question 57: FILIAL PIETY IS A CHERISHED ASPECT OF EASTERN CULTURE, AND ARGUABLY OF CULTURES WORLDWIDE. HOW SHOULD LAY PRACTITIONERS UNDERSTAND FILIAL PIETY?Answer: Parents instinctively love their children unconditionally, often dedicating their entire lives to their children's well-being. However, children don't naturally reciprocate this love to the same degree. They tend to focus their love on their own offspring, a phenomenon our ancestors described as "TEARS ROLLING DOWNWARD," meaning love typically flows from older generations to younger ones. The greatest joy of aging parents is often being surrounded as their affection for their children and grandchildren keeps growing. However, modern life's demands frequently separate families, with children moving away to pursue careers and start their own families. This has led to an increasing number of elderly parents experiencing loneliness and isolation. Our ancestors, especially Confucianism, placed great importance on filial piety, considering it a fundamental human virtue. Those who lack filial piety are viewed as falling short of true humanity. While the natural tendency is for love to flow from parent to child, we must consciously cultivate filial piety as a moral obligation. We should make deliberate efforts to care for our aging parents, bring them joy, and guide them in their Buddhist spiritual practice. In the Buddhist tradition, the Ullambana Festival is a significant event honoring filial piety. This festival serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting our parents and preserving this essential virtue for future generations

Question 56: PARENTS OFTEN HOPE THEIR CHILDREN WILL EXCEL ACADEMICALLY, BRINGING HONOR AND HAPPINESS ...
Question 56: PARENTS OFTEN HOPE THEIR CHILDREN WILL EXCEL ACADEMICALLY, BRINGING HONOR AND HAPPINESS TO THE FAMILY. HOWEVER, NOT ALL CHILDREN ARE ACADEMICALLY GIFTED. HOW SHOULD LAY PRACTITIONERS VIEW THIS SITUATION AND FIND PEACE OF MIND?Answer: A child's academic success often has roots in the family's overall karmic balance, rather than solely in the child's individual abilities. While parents may urge their children to study more, the foundation of academic achievement extends beyond mere effort. To foster a child's intelligence, parents should cultivate positive intentions even before the child is born, such as hoping the child will contribute positively to society. Furthermore, parents should encourage their children to perform acts of kindness from an early age, like assisting classmates, sharing school supplies, helping peers understand lessons, etc. These actions lay the groundwork for future academic success.Parents should anticipate their children will not be excelling in schools, and take blue-collar jobs. Parents should also prepare themselves for the possibility that their child might not excel academically or reach great career heights. It's crucial to recognize that happiness and fulfillment can be found in various life paths, and that a child's moral character holds more importance than their academic achievements. If a child embodies virtues such as compassion, diligence, and a desire to help others, hopefully future generations produce geniuses.

Question 55: MANY PEOPLE SEEK VARIOUS FORMS OF ENTERTAINMENT TO RELIEVE STRESS AFTER A LONG DAY OF WORK. WHAT ABOUT LAY PRACTITIONERS?
Question 55: MANY PEOPLE SEEK VARIOUS FORMS OF ENTERTAINMENT TO RELIEVE STRESS AFTER A LONG DAY OF WORK. WHAT ABOUT LAY PRACTITIONERS?Answer: Entertainment is a common way to alleviate mental stress, find enjoyment, and recharge both physically and mentally, helping us face daily challenges. Healthy forms of entertainment include getting a good night's sleep, taking walks in nature, listening to soothing music, watching a good movie, having coffee with friends, etc. However, it's crucial to avoid harmful and addictive forms of entertainment.Lay practitioners can find relaxation through activities such as practicing qigong, meditating, listening to spiritual music, connecting with brethren, taking mindful walks, or engaging in community service like picking up litter. When selecting forms of entertainment, we should steer clear of those that might hinder our spiritual growth or disturb others. Ideally, our leisure activities should generate positive karma and bring joy and benefit to those around us.

Question 54: TEMPLES OFTEN PROVIDE FREE SERVICES LIKE SPIRITUAL COUNSELINGS, PEACEFULNESS AND RELIEF PRAYERS, EXORCISM, MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES, MUSIC LESSONS, AND EVEN FREE MEALS. HOWEVER, .......
Question 54: TEMPLES OFTEN PROVIDE FREE SERVICES LIKE SPIRITUAL COUNSELINGS, PEACEFULNESS AND RELIEF PRAYERS, EXORCISM, MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES, MUSIC LESSONS, AND EVEN FREE MEALS. HOWEVER, IN THE SECULAR WORLD, EVERYTHING COMES WITH A PRICE. WHY CAN'T WE APPLY THE SAME BUSINESS PRINCIPLES TO TEMPLES?Answer: When a lay practitioner makes a donation to a temple, it's a voluntary act of generosity without any expectation of a specific return. The donor simply wishes for the well-being of the monks and nuns and for the continued flourishing of the Dharma. In response, temples offer most of their services for free, with the exception of items like robes that are sold to generate funds for daily expenses. Temples courageously offer free services to embody the spirit of compassion and selfless giving, without concern for profit or loss. Despite this, these temples are often blessed with sufficient resources to meet their needs.Lay practitioners have family responsibilities and financial obligations that make it difficult to provide everything for free. However, to accumulate merit, lay practitioners can offer free services within their means, such as: starting a free community class (with proper government approval), teaching music or martial arts, cleaning up litter, planting trees, visiting the elderly, providing free vegetarian meals (taking precautions against sabotage), cleaning cemeteries, etc. An ideal society would be one where everything is free and everyone is well-provided for (such a society likely exists only in heavenly realms).

Question 53: LIFE IS FULL OF UPS AND DOWNS. HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN A CONSISTENT SPIRITUAL PRACTICE AMIDST THESE CONSTANT CHANGES?
Answer: Consider a husband who comes home after a stressful day at work and takes out his frustrations on his wife and children. This disrupts the family's harmony and shows how external circumstances can affect our emotions and actions. The ability to maintain a peaceful family life, regardless of work-related stress, demonstrates a person's moral character and resilience.Likewise, in our spiritual practice, life is never without challenges. We will experience periods of highs and lows, prosperity and adversity. Those who lack determination may lose their spiritual resolve when facing difficulties, neglecting their practice and squandering the merits they've accumulated. We should resolutely make commitments, earnestly worship the Buddha, assiduously meditate, and enthusiastically engage in virtuous activities to cultivate a steadfast spiritual practice while adversity has not yet arrived. However, even with these efforts, it may not be until we face adversity that we truly discover the depth of our spiritual resolve. Challenges serve as a measure of our spiritual progress. When we can face life's greatest challenges with peace and equanimity, even when our reputation is tarnished, then we can say our spiritual practice is somehow sufficient.

Question 52: HOW SHOULD A LAY PRACTITIONER HANDLE MISTAKES, GIVEN THAT THEY DON'T HAVE THE SAME DISCIPLINARY STRUCTURE AS MONASTICS?
Answer: Monasteries have Pure Rules (Vinaya Piṭaka)*, and when a monk breaks a rule, their teacher provides guidance and discipline based on the severity of the offense. However, lay practitioners are not under such direct supervision. Since everyone makes mistakes, it can be problematic for lay practitioners to receive consistent guidance and discipline. There are two scenarios for lay practitioners who have made mistakes: self-awareness and observing in other brethren.Self-awareness of a mistake: If we realize we've made a mistake, we can either sincerely repent by offering prayers to the Buddha or seek out our spiritual teacher to confess, receive guidance, and accept any discipline they suggest.Observing a mistake in other brethren: If we notice some of our brethren making a mistake, the appropriate course of action depends on our relationship with them. If we are close, we can directly approach them, explaining the mistake and encouraging them to repent as mentioned above. Otherwise, we should inform the brethren leader or spiritual teacher so they can address the issue and investigate the matter further. Ignoring a mistake made by another can lead to negative consequences for oneself.(*) Pure Rules (Vinaya Piṭaka) in Buddhism are a set of stipulations and advice that guide the Buddhist community of monks and nuns. They are considered the basis of monastic life and are essential for the preservation of the Buddha’s teachings.Citation: https://www.britannica.com/topic/Vinaya-Pitaka

Question 51: HOW SHOULD ONE ADDRESS LOUD NOISE DISTURBANCES THAT INTERFERE WITH MEDITATION AND CHANTING?
Question 51: HOW SHOULD ONE ADDRESS LOUD NOISE DISTURBANCES THAT INTERFERE WITH MEDITATION AND CHANTING?Answer: In Western countries, one could simply call the police to resolve such noise disturbances. However, in some countries, this issue is not as easily addressed. Many violent incidents have occurred between neighbors due to noise disputes. While noise pollution can have serious negative impacts, some laws don't fully recognize its severity and often treat it as a minor offense. This has led to persistent noise problems that disrupt people's studies, work, rest, and especially the spiritual practices of lay practitioners. We should petition the National Assembly to enact laws against noise pollution thoroughly, creating a quieter, more civilized society where people's right to a peaceful environment is respected. When confronted with noise disturbances, it's best to contact the local authorities rather than confronting the noisy neighbors directly to avoid conflicts. Additionally, we can display a sign in front of our homes that reads, "LET'S WORK TOGETHER TO MAINTAIN A PEACEFUL NEIGHBORHOOD FOR EVERYONE'S HEALTH."

ABOUT THIS SHOW
Question 01: DO LAY PRACTITIONERS FACE GREATER CHALLENGES IN FOCUSING ON SPIRITUAL PRACTICE COMPARED TO MONASTICS DUE TO FAMILY LIFE CONSTRAINTS?Answer: Indeed, family life can present more obstacles to spiritual practice than monastic life.
