Question 32: How should lay practitioners practice repentance in daily life?

from PRACTICE GUIDE FOR LAY PRACTITIONERS · host Janna Order Monastery

Human nature is such that those who show genuine remorse are more likely to be forgiven. This principle applies not only to interpersonal relationships but also to social justice and even natural laws. Those who sincerely repent often find some degree of forgiveness, although this doesn't completely absolve them of their misdeeds.Over countless lifetimes, we have likely committed innumerable wrongdoings. Even if we can't recall specific transgressions from our current life, the fact that we still suffer from ignorance, emotional entanglements, lack of merit, and various karmic obstacles suggests that we must have committed many harmful actions. Acknowledging this, we can continue to practice repentance. Gradually, our negative karma will diminish, our life obstacles will decrease, and our meditation practice will deepen.A common practice across religions involves kneeling before a deity to express deep remorse and seek forgiveness. Many faiths also encourage devout prostrations. This sincere reverence, combined with genuine remorse, gradually erodes our past negative karma.Buddhism offers various repentance rituals that involve paying obeisance to the Buddhas while reciting our transgressions. Through consistent recitation and prostrations, past karma can be gradually reduced. This principle is also applied in meditation practice, which will be discussed later.#Buddhism #SpiritualPractice #LayPractitioner #Repentance #Karma #Forgiveness #Mindfulness #Dharma #InnerPeace #Meditation
